We've come so far over the years in making homosexuality socially acceptable. Indeed, so many of our favourite celebrities are gay. But by treating the word 'gay' like a label and regarding homosexuality as something that needs to be exposed and treated as something that acts as a hindrance to a person, articles such as this undo so much of this hard work.
And I still maintain that 11% is quite a large proportion of people who share something in common. We're talking millions.”
As a gay person myself I disagree.
I think stories like this serve to actually MAKE homosexuality more widely known and socially acceptable. As more and more "normal" people are then discovered to be gay, it really does help break down barriers and eliminate stereotypes.
I would have a problem if someone in the closet is outed (i.e. the case of Nick Brown MP who clearly didn't want his sexuality known) but in this case Howard seems to be fairly open about his sexuality.
The article itself is also (IMO) very sympathetic and likely to thus instill support amongst people reading the article.
So I think things like this are good for gay rights - you're correct, it does have an element of making it seem "different" and something to talk about, I also hope for the day when stories like this aren't "news". But in today's society they are, so the more stories like this appear the more gradually acceptable and "normal" it will be become and THEN they'll eventually stop. Not having stories like this at all will slow down this happening.
