Does anyone know what the freesat start and end recording signals actually are? Are there packets containing start and end events? Or is there a data stream containing the status of the programme currently being transmitted? Or ...?

At one time, I expected freesat to use the Now and Next data stream being transmitted on the transponder. However, I've noticed that changes to the Now and Next information displayed by the HDR do not coincide with recordings starting and stopping (but the HDR could be getting the information from its cached EPG).

If the start and end signals are sent as events rather than a change in status, a box missing a packet might explain some instances of boxes missing a recording when other boxes with the same firmware and no programme clashes are OK.

As far as I'm aware, if it conforms to the DVB specification, programme start times are stored in the EIT (Event Information Table) therefore, conceivably Freesat+ uses this for accurate recording. There is no programme end time stored anywhere in the Tables.

A good site to look at is 'dvbsnoop.sourceforge.net' in particular you may find this link useful:

Being careful what I say...

The EPG is the global view, the NIT Actual Present/Following keeps you up to date in the period up to the beginning and the Accurate Record triggers announce the start and stop.

TVAnytime is also an influential part of the UK profile for recording.

Thanks. I think I can see what you are getting at, but obviously can't be sure. Are the principles behind freesat's Accurate Record, Series Record, and Alternative Instances really that secret?
