Thanks again, everyone. Your lovely messages have been a real comfort to us both today. Bertie is now buried in the garden. It was so sad saying goodbye to him.
That's probably the way most of us want to go, in our sleep, happy with a full belly from a nice meal. Still, very sad though.
You probably know this already but with regard to your other little one who jumped on your bed purring, cats purr not only when they're happy but when they are comforting themselves if they don't feel well or are upset. It's possible he/she wanted some reassurance/comfort from you. I'm sure they're all in shock too.
I'm so sorry to hear about Bertie. As others have said, it sounds like he had a wonderful life with you and a peaceful end. Please give Jaffa and the others some scritches from me. My floofy ginger boy is snoring behind my chair right now!
That must have been terrible for you. To see him healthy when going to bed and getting up such a short while later and finding him gone like that. A shock.
I guess the only comfort perhaps is it was quick and painless and not a long suffering illness.
You made his later years happy, safe and comforting ones, which he may not have had living in the streets.
I hope your memories of him ease some of your heartache and your other cats I'm sure sense his loss too
was he old?, it's strange as cats normally wander off and hide if they're ill or they seem to know when they're going to die, my thoughts are with you, my eyes are welling up as I type this

We don't really know how old he was because we took him in as a stray, five years ago. Last Autumn he had a stroke but recovered completely within a few days. We assume it was another stroke. We think he was about twelve. He'd shown no signs of feeling poorly or anything on the day he died. Like I said earlier, he was frantic for his supper as always and very happy. So nice for him to go with no pain or suffering. We're starting to come to terms with it today but we miss him terribly.

Unbelievably, in the space of fifteen minutes, he had eaten his supper, laid down on his bed, and died. He hasn't been poorly and was wolfing his food down as I said goodnight to him. He must have had a stroke or a heart attack. Had I not gone down he'd have been there all night with the other poor cats beside him. He is now on a blanket in the sitting room. I'm so shocked I know this message is rambling but I don't know what else to say.”
OMG what a shock for you. I am really sorry for your loss. At least the cat went quick and was happy you gave him a wonderful life.
