Bird Table Advice
Lululamb

Posted this in advice too but thought the Pet forum might be good to try as well.

I would really like to put a bird table in my yard (not got a big garden) but i live by the sea so there is obviously seagulls around.

Although i'm not on the sea front (about a 15 min walk from sea front) do you think it would be safe to put up a bird table with food on or do you think i will attract seagulls - which i don't want?

Any help would be great.

I live in a seagull area. The only time they come is when I put big crusts out. They're not bothered about seed or fat balls.

I agree that seed is the way to go. Does your bird table have a "roof" on it? That might deter the gulls a bit. I have a friend who lives right on the cliffs and she is able to feed the garden birds. Just don't put bread on the table.

Thanks for the advice. I think i may get a table and put some feeders underneath as someone said that the gulls would have problems getting to these if i hand them under the table.

You can also get feeders which have a cage thing around them, to stop bigger birds/squirrels from eating the food, so they might be worth a try.

Or use a bit of chickenwire folded round stops cats too.

As suggested try to get a table with a roof on , RSPB make some nice ones , it will deter the larger birds effectively. I live a little inland and gulls come in to the garden and take scraps I put out for them and other birds but they can't get to the small birds food on the table.
