I have installed a Sony RDR GX120 as per what i thought were instructions - aerial in/out to Recorder, Recorder scart 1 to TV, Recorder scart 2 to Sky Box. Trust me to have to have problems with this. Rec did a search for channels ok. But i can only get Sky if i turn off Rec (!!). This is on AV1 . Nothing on AV2 as there is no scart to it. Picture quality is poor on both. I really only want to record Sky on this as it isnt my main TV set up. Any ideas ?

Select AV2 as input on DVD recorder rather than one of the tuned in Freeview channels. This is the Sky signal being passed to the DVDR. This is also the source you need to select when you want to record Sky.

It might be a good idea to connect the second scart cable directly from Sky box to TV - that way, you can still watch Sky even if you are recording Freeview on the DVDR.

The reason you are seeing Sky when the DVDR is switched off is because it automatically passes its scart input signal through to its scart output cable - so Sky is being passed into and out of it when it is in standby. To achieve this when the DVDR is switched on, ou need to select the correct souce - AV2.

Im not very good at this as you can tell....but if i have AV2 from DVDR and the 'second' scart to AV1 from Sky box, how is there a link to record Sky. I had better mention that freeview has packed up on my Toshiba TV (the DTV part is greyed out on menu) so thats why i really only want to record directly off sky. Sorry for confusion.

Keeping this very simple:

Sky box TV scart to TV AV1. So you can watch Sky on TV, regardless of whether your DVD recorder is switched on or not, seeing as the Sky box is connected directly to your TV.

Sky box VCR scart to DVD recorder AV2. So you can record Sky on your DVD recorder.

DVD recorder AV1 to TV AV2. So you can watch DVDs, and also see what the DVD recorder is recording when you want to record either Freeview (from the recorder's inbuilt tuner) or when you want to record Sky (from AV2).

You are creating a triangle. Each piece of kit has two scart connections, which are going to each of the other pieces of kit. Two scarts on TV, one from Sky, one from DVDR. Two scarts on Sky, one to TV, one to DVDR. Two scarts on DVDR, one from Sky, one to TV. It's not difficult.

Tried the step by step guide for idiots and im up and running. Have to say tho, in my defence, that a third scart was needed (contrary to manual) and i used aerial in to sky box, then connected to aerial in to DVDR (again contrary to manual). Im happy bunny now

You don't need to connect your aerial to the Sky box.
The only reason you might want to is if you want to run a lead from the Sky box RF2 to a TV in another room.

Any Sky subscriber (especially a tchno like yourself) needs simply to exchange their Sky box for a Sky+ box (unless they specifically wish to have hard copy DVDs).

Just one little box that does so much is a far better solution than trying to understand what scarts go where!

There are loads of posters on here (myself included) that could spend time with you getting the 'best' set up, but this is not easy with only a single recording tuner when weighed against optimum picture quality - wont go into the reasons here.

If the DVDR is new, take it back - save yourself cash and heartache, youll not regret it.

Ha ha love the tchno bit. Totally agree with what you are saying and in fact i am on the waiting list for Sky+HD. Now the thing is im a huge fan of the superbikes on eurosport and wanted to record on a sunday to save too much grief from the other half. I got the DVDR off ebay for less than 50 quid, just to keep me going til the new sky box appears. Can probably sell it for similar price.

I recently purchased above recorder to enable me to upscale DVDs on my Sony KDL-26V400 tv. However, after connecting HDMI lead, the picture was obviously not upscaled, so I tried to alter the resolution on the recorder, only to be left with a blank screen, "stating out of range." I cannot get the on-screen menu back up, and wonder how I manage to resolve the problem.

Connect via scart - hopefully this won't try to use the upscaling ratio you have put in and should let you see what is onscreen, then drop it back down to a ratio that your TV can cope with. Or look for a reset switch somewhere on the machine - the manual should tell you how to do this. Or find somebody who's got a TV that can cope with a 1080p picture being sent to it, connect the DVDR to their TV, and then adjust it back down to a smaller number.

resolution is too high by the sounds of it,which is why you got the error.

Try unplugging the recorder or resetting it and go for a sensible resolution, lower than the high one you chose.
