Fish pond advice wanted.

Ive just put an outside pond in the garden. Its fairly large and Ive just got a few fish and a pump.

However I know very little about pumps and fish etc so I am just learning but I am wanting some advice about the pump.It is an electric pump which has a long flex on it which directly plugs into a socket.

I know this is a daft question and I have gone by the manufacturers instructions but is it safe being plugged into a socket because the pump goes in the water so the electric cable obviously goes into the water.

I am just worried in case the cable shorts out and electrocutes the water and fish.

Somebody tell me this wont happen.

It won't happen.

It's definitely not a daft question but that is unlikely to happen, for your own safety you should buy and use a circuit breaker. If something goes wrong it cuts out the power immediately, I use one on any plug where you are using power tools, or garden tools, they could save your life, any good harware store will have one.

Unless you have Koi, pond fish are relatively easy to care for, give them a few places to hide, like plants, I put an old ceramic chimney pot that I found in the garden in the bottom of the pond, the fish overwinter in there and hide from any predators.

Thanks for that. Yes I have put gravel (I washed it first) and a few carefully broken plantpots on the bottom.

A circuit breaker sounds like a good idea. I will make one of those my priority.

Thanks.
