Replacing faulty machine
I have an increasing number of freezes on the box (nothing special happens - it just locks up silently and I have to turn it off at the wall socket to get it back again) and a lot of 'ghost' recordings (delete a programme and around four zero length copies appear a few days later) so Dixons have arranged to replace it tomorrow (that's pretty good service).
However, there are quite a lot of unwatched recordings I'd prefer not to lose. I have an empty 1TB USB hard drive but the Humax complains that it's formatted NTFS and I don't see how I can reformat it from within XP Pro. I've also got an 8GB flash drive that's formatted FAT32 but the Humax won't let me offload HD recordings. Anyone got any thoughts on what to do? TIA |

TIA Of course opening the case invalidates the warranty as you need to remove the case seal (some came without a seal at all). Remember most HD programmes from BBC HD get repeated ad nauseum. |

You can format a drive FAT32 up to 2Tb but not using XP (max 32gb). Free third party utilities are easily avalilable on the net. Such a big drive is not very efficient using FAT32 due to the wasted space in the massive file clusters.
Someone check my sums, please. I didn't expect the waste to be very significant, but I didn't expect it to be that insignificant. |

That is certainly the case for a PC where you can expect a lot of small files, but it's hardly relevent to a PVR. A 2 Tb disk will typically store about 600 recordings (based on my average of about 100 on the HDR's 320 Gb disk). That's 1,800 files in total. Call it 2,000. With 32 Kb clusters, that's a maximum of 64 Mb wasted, equivalent to about 2 minutes of an SD programme. That's hardly an issue on a 2 Tb drive.

However every recording has 2 small sidecar files (.hmt, .nts) and these will waste a significant amount of disc space.

Yup, took those into account. It's how I got to 1800 files from 600 recordings. I keep going over the sums and, unless I'm repeating the same stupid mistake, I keep coming up with a rule-of-thumb wastage of 1 minute per terabyte for SD. I think we can forget this as an issue, the 4 Gbyte limit for an individual file is much more relevent.

In any case using EXT3 for drives of 1Tb plus must be a better option.

True, if you have a ready means of formating the drive, and aren't interested in reading the drive on a PC. For those who don't have any other interest in Linux, converting their PC to dual boot is a little extreme.
