My girlfriend informed me that when she was just about to switch on our SONY RDR HXD890 at about 1.40pm yesterday she noticed that the word UPDATE was on the display.

In the settings the Hardware version is shown as 455 and the Software version as 115. Not sure what it was before the update or indeed what the update was for!

Being the type that likes to know what an update is for, be it for Windows XP, my mobile phone or in this case my RDR, does anyone know please?

The machine has already received the recent update which fixed the aspect ratio problem so it isn't that.

I have looked at Sony's website and have drawn a blank....... and yes my drawn blank looks like this:

Thats the daily epg update.

Correct.

It's in the User Manual.

It updates the Freeview+ guide at 10am and 3am every day when it says UPDATE on the front LED.

Thanks for the replies guys. This may explain a problem that I have had sometimes whilst attempting to record Smallville on E4 in the morning. Sometimes even though I have set it to record via the EPG, it fails to record. This morning (as I am not at work!) I watched what happens at 10am and just after 10 lo and behold UPDATE appeared on the front of the machine.

My guess is that sometimes the update signal clashes with the recording function kicking into action.

What is interesting is that the start time for Smallville varies during the week and it looks like the failures are when it starts at 10:10am and not 10:05am!

It could be that the machine is in the middle of updating the EPG and doesnt want to be 'bothered' with the trivial matter of recording something!

The epg updates(whether Digital/Guideplus),shouldn't affect any timer recordings.
Particularly as the updates only occur in standby,not when the recorder is ON
Have you tried deleting the existing timer and re-setting it ?
