Well considering the time of year 'The Apprentice' is filmed, maybe Esqualita meant Morcambe in the winter.

No I didn't.
I remember the glory days of Morecambe. Now it's...well...
let's just say...not as good as it was.

Yes it is! You obviously have a good ear for phonemes in language.

I defer to your experience. I've never been there.

The microphone was necessary for the TV show so viewers could hear her.

In which case I wish they'd left it switched off.

Can anyone in the trade tell us what Katherine would have cost Sir Alan? Was he downsizing his budget in these credit crunch times?

No idea what she would have cost him but I would hazard a guess that she came a damn sight cheaper than a day's polo training - now there's a seriously horrendous prize if ever I saw one! Personally I wouldn't have minded the private recital but good God you would not have got me near a polo horse...

This was not the kind of treat you would enjoy unless you like the classical/crossover genre of music. I'd be similarly underwhelmed if I was offered the chance for a private recital from a jazz / blues singer, for example, as I can't stand that kind of music. You are never going to please everyone.

I quite like KJ's voice though accept that she is no opera singer. The classical purists will loathe her on principle, others will simply find the mezzo soprano sound and would do even if they listened to Bartoli or Kozena etc etc, it is not to everyone's taste even if you have the most perfect mezzo voice in the world. The same goes for the soprano.

The one issue I have with posters here is all the whinging that Katherine lost Rhydian the X Factor:yawn:. Drrrrr no guys....the Leon Jackson I've Had A Terrible Life Sob Story lost Rhydian the X Factor, and had probably lost him the X Factor before Rhydian and KJ even stepped onto the stage. Granted it was a bad duet, but bugger all to do with the final result, and Rhydian has not stopped going on about how KJ is his absolute dream woman in interviews since then so I very much doubt he holds his failure to win as her personal responsibility. In any case the Welsh wonder has had very much the last laugh over poor old Leon anyway...

That's what I thought too - it was more like a punishment. But she redeemed herself (slightly) by singing that Hallelujah song. How do you spell hallelujah .... is that right? It doesn't look right. lol

The classical crossover genre is one of my favourites, yet I cannot bear Kathrine Jenkins voice, so I'm afraid the theory of the taste of music is wrong. I like the music, I just cannot bear the way she sings it. It's not because she's a mezzo-soprano either, as my favourite artist is Enya, who has the most beautiful voice to my ears is mezzo-soprano herself, yet of course she has a completely different, more natural style of singing, whereas Jenkins seems quite forced and too deep and out of her natural range, bordering on an opera style which, as you say, she is in no way an opera singer.

I don't think there are many people out there who judge voices purely according to their range - that like sopranos but can't bear mezzos as you seem to be suggesting. You may have an overall preference, sure, but I think most people like or dislike the voice itself, regardless of range. I know I do.

For my money, KJ is really an alto, trying to beef up her mezzo register so that she can sing opera roles in the future (there being a lamentable lack of opportunities for altos in opera). She's doing quite a good job of that. I don't mind her voice, I just don't really appreciate the so called 'classical crossover' genre itself. I don't want to hear a voice like that sing Hallelujah. Let KD Lang sing Hallelujah and Katherine Jenkins sing Schubert.

I agree broadly with what you're saying about Rhydian and the x factor final, though I think Leon's pairing with Kylie must have given him a boost. He would have won anyway though. It's a pity those who voted for him failed to buy his album. In the long term, Rhydian must be very happy with how things have turned out for him.

She is not called an opera singer. She firmly denies being an opera singer.
She is a classical singer.

LaurieMarlow, sorry - I probably didn't express myself very well in my post. I didn't mean that some people like the soprano voice but dislike the mezzo - I meant that a lot of people dislike that kind of 'operatic' singing full stop whether it be mezzo or soprano. I think you are probably right about KJ being more of a natural alto...

Rugby rose yes of course it is perfectly possible to love classical crossover and dislike KJ. I like KJ and dislike a lot of the classical crossover 'boybands' like Blake or Il Divo - so I do see your point. I do still think though that you would be more likely to have enjoyed the recital if you were a classical crossover fan than if say you were a fan of heavy rock or something

Rowanjeli you are right KJ makes no actual claim to be an opera singer when interviewed etc. The problem is that if you read the biog on her official website it refers to her as a new genre of opera superstar who is redefining classical crossover or some such rubbish and it makes derogatory comments about 'stereotypical' opera singers being fat and frumpy and aloof. This might be the stereotype but is very far from actual truth and of course this is one of the reasons why KJ is so loathed and despised by the purist classical community - they interpret this as KJ slagging off opera singers having never actually sung in an opera. Which might not actually be the case but you can see how the biog could be interpreted in this way.

The press of course constantly refer to her as being an opera singer as in their narrow little minds anyone who sings anything vaguely classical must therefore be an opera singer.

Have they cut down the budget for the Apprentice this year? Last week the winners got a game of Polo PMSL this week a two-bob opera singer. What will the winners get next week? Bowling, Cinema, Pizza Hut?

I said she is CALLED, I didn't say she calls herself.
And as for being a classical singer...I think that's seriously in question too.
