perhaps watch it first.

Doctor Who has always 'paid homage' to existing films, horror etc.

Mmmm

Far off sandy planet, with, seemingly, thousands of flying beasties with big gnashers...

Does seem rather familiar?

Not like RTD to rip off someone elses idea.

*remembers Midnight

Don't remember the human fly in Pitch Black. Or the museum robbery. Or the London bus.

Crazy idea but how about watching the other 59 minutes first?

And you know what even if it does turn out to be a complete rip-off of Pitch Black I give you the following...

Planet Of Evil
Pyramids Of Mars
Brain Of Morbius
Seeds Of Doom
Talons Of Weng-Chiang

etc. etc. etc.

lol, but why would they do that when it is much easier to make lazy assumptions beforehand...

Anyways those going in to the episode expecting Pitch Black are liable to be disappointed. This has been described as a 'romp' 'joyoues' and 'fun' by various people connected with it. Pitch Black it aint.

Midnight....one of the best episodes of DW ever.....

And definitly not a rip off of anything. I think you might need to check what the defintion of 'rip off' is, because it alleges theft.

Oh and don't forget to add the biggest similarity.....a red London Bus!!!!!!!

Your right.....I now will never be able to think of Midnight as the best story ever that I have seen, because it doesn't relate to the world of Doctor Who at all, and the Doctor and the rest of the Characters are nothing unique and don't have their own unique experience....because it is a word to word Rip off from you know where.....

And Forget that....I think I will refuse to watch Blink too, as that is also not unique....

Actually even better....I won't bother with the whole show....because come on how dare they rip off from H G Wells!!!!!!!

HG Wells ripped off The Time Machine from A Christmas Carole...everybody knows that!

As i say, I really do wish people would chose their words more careful, I think it's pretty out of order to actually imply plagerism, tbh, which is exactly what you are doing if you accuse someone of 'ripping off' something.

And it seems especially silly to do it based on a 30-odd second trailer that has perhaps two or three superficial similaritys to something, as well as a shed load of more significant differences.

All of which are massive rip-offs of other people's ideas.

Oh Yeah!!!!! Silly me!!!!!

Yes it is quite a strong word isn't it.......

Yep....in the end it doesn't matter if the idea or concept behind the story i.e. Time Travel....has been used in a million other places....what is important is that the idea/concept feels that it was always made for this particular story.....like without Time Travel Doctor Who wouldn't be Doctor Who!!!!! Simple as that really....

London bus is just a crashed vehicle as as it traveled through space ie space ship lol.
How do you know its a human fly? looks like a winged alien with sharp pointy teef to me, what museum robbery?

as i originally said, first impressions via the trailer, that's what it LOOKS like. Im All for a little nod here and there to other SCFI, gives us lot a chuckle and something to talk about (i.e The Flash Gordon ending to the master) and I HOPE its not a straight rip and i will wait and see, just wanted others thoughts on the subject.

Yes London Bus that goes through a wormhole on earth is exactley like a space ship that travels in space and gets hit by astriods and is veered off course......yes that is the same.......

And how do you know that they are not human flies???.....
Look... the trailer may remind you of Pitch Black....and that is fair enough....(it didn't for me but what the hell).....but to say that it will be a ripp off is something else entirely based on those thirty seconds......That is the same as saying that when a person first hears about Doctor Who....and says that it is a ripp off the Time Machine.....

Why are some people moaning? just enjoy it, I know I will.

There is hardly anything original these days on TV or at the cinema! At least it is not a remake of an old Doctor Who episode, unlike Hollywood who have become lazy churning out remakes with Escape to Witch Mountain, Get Smart, The Day the Earth stood still...

They aren't the human flies. And doesn't this kind of prove that point that you know nothing about this episode beyond the sixty second trailer?

I didn't say there was, was a reference to a previous quote, if you bothered to read it

For all those that are worried if it is a Pitch Black ripp off can now rest with ease that they were right........As always the lying, copying, never-paying-homage-but ripping off writer RTD has been upfront and honest about the influences behind POTD.....

“So, what are you allowed to tell us about tonight's show?

It's an hour-long special, a great big spectacular - the 60-minute specials are always a chance to spread our wings a bit and flex out. It's a good old roller-coaster adventure, this one - sometimes the stories are very dark, sometimes they're very funny, but this is a great big adventure, a little bit Indiana Jones, a little bit Flight of the Phoenix, a little bit Pitch Black. It's got deserts... these big vistas, it's got a nice scale to it.
”

From the Telegraph.....

And like always I will say......so what......as long as its fun as he says it is

I'll be recording it, but I'm really looking forward to watching it

Its a self-contained adventure, the Tenth Doctor's final "avin' a laugh" story, starring Lee Evans - so I will watch it as such. If I come onto here after watching it to see posters ripping it apart for being weak, barmy and rubbish I'd probably just get depressed thinking about how cynical some people can be.

Give the guy a break! All he said was it looked like it was a Pitch Black ripp off! I don't think "ripp off" is strong, just the same as I think "homage" is a total cop out!
To be honest all five of our household said it looked like "Pitch Black with a bus" in unison! I'm not a Doctor Who fan anyhow. I usually think the stories are lame, tame, camp and very OTT on both the acting front and storyline!
I personally think we need a return to the darker, grittier DW of the seventies. lose the gags and the badly cast special guests.

This is just my opinion and I know it has a huge following in it's current incarnation.

The creatures look very similar to a 1990s Judge Dredd comic book story:

http://www.2000adonline.com/books/as...ting_party.jpg

In Dredd's world the creatures are called 'dune sharks'. They live in the sand. They first appeared in the strip back in the 1990s. I think Russell T Davies was a fan of 2000AD comic or definitely aware of it - the comic Dredd appears in. I guess a lot of sci-fi is shared by writers - they may see sci-fi characters and concepts when younger and years later remember the images and use them.

A Dredd/Doctor Who story could be cool - if a bit different!

The OP says that it is a ripp off, and then hopes its not true.....hence suggesting that it is a bad thing....hence "ripp off" in the context is a strong word.....

And I may be a fan since the New series, but I have been watching a lot of the classic series.....and so far have not come across a dark, gritty episode like you describe....that doesn't contain even an ounce of "lame, tame, camp and very OTT on both the acting front and storyline....gags and the badly cast special guests"....at least no more than New Who doesn't.....

So if you could point me to the right direction, I would be more than happy to watch these so called stories.....

Exactly....and if like RTD they are honest (yes honest) enough to admit it.....even better....

Oh I love this bit......

“So you don't read the forums online?

My boyfriend does, which is unfortunate, because he doesn't understand fandom, he doesn't belong to it, and says 'You must never have anything to do with these people again.' And I have to explain that it's not the viewers, it's just a very particular subset, usually men, who choose to type online.

That's fair enough - it doesn't mean their opinions don't count. But in a way, it's rather marvellous, because everyone - you, me, everyone - has a little voice saying: 'You're rubbish, everyone's better than you, you're a fraud.' And I've got people who do that for me! So it actually sort of frees me up”

LOL.....

Well it's possible the dune sharks were invented prior to Dredd, I don't know. But the dune sharks in Dredd's world can fly, have razor teeth. The similarity is almost identical. Taking a guess, I reckon someone on the Doctor Who production team - writer, creature designer etc, is a fan of 2000AD and Judge Dredd and was inspired by the dune sharks. They do say "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."
