Hi

A pal of mine has an o2 contract and has had it for many years, he is now on 500 mins and paying about £25 p/m and the contract is due to end. Definetly needs to keep the number. He has big finance problems, although should still be able to pay the bill. However, I have heard he should transfer to a PAYG phone as this can save money and he will be better off.

Has anyone done this and recommed it? and not to sure how to explain to him as its a delicate conversation.

you can keep your number you just need to ask for your pac code then take it to another network plus you can get some good deals on pay as you go virgin with there unlimited texts and net with the option to buy mins if you want or it is just 20p to call plus vodafone have a new tariff for pay as you go coming

If his contract is ending, has he thought about going onto a SIM only deal? Some of them are absolute bargains

Do you need a credit check for this and can you end your current contract, as the 12 months is up this monday, so there is effectively no direct debit?

I am not sure how to approach the discussion as it is a delicate area? and he is a really close pal.

If it you stick with the same network, they dont do a credit check.

You just ring them up, and ask them to move to a sim only tarriff

Actually that's not right (well as far as I know at TMO and Orange). Credit checks ARE done for SIMOs but they are easier to pass. There are even "lite" versions of the TMO Solos (no MMS, roaming etc) for those will very questionable credit scores.

If he stays on the same network they won't perform a credit check. Moving they would perform a credit check for a SIMO.

However PAYG is ultimately much less value for money than contracts, it doesn't save anyone money.

For example £20 SIM Only would give you 600 mins and Unlimited Texts but on PAYG would give you 100 Mins and 600 Texts.

He should ring up O2 and say he wants to cancel. They should offer him a good deal to stay. I was offered £10 a month including a new phone. It commits you to a new 18 month contract though.

if he's prepared to commit to another 12 or 18 months then he should ask to negotiate a better deal.

generally they will offer a slightly better deal that the 30 day contracts in order to get you to sign for an extended period.

that having been said there may be an advantage in being able to downgrade his contract at any time.

but payg is not the way
you can see the o2 sim only deals here:
30day
http://shop.o2.co.uk/sim-only-simplicity
12 month
http://shop.o2.co.uk/simplicity-12

if he calls them he may get a better deal, in particular if you can do your research and find a better one with another network, they will match it. and thus avoid the credit check.

preferbly he wants to reduce the direct debits coming out of his account, thus I thought a pay as u go might be the way to go. But it seems maybe not by the replies. Is there an alternative?

It's been a while since I left Orange, but when I left TMO in Jan we still credit checked every pre to post migration.

I was referring to full blown contract to SIM Only. Both being PAYM. Retentions simply move the customer over, counting as a save.

Any move from PAYG to SIMO or contract would still require a credit check.

If he is on 02 tell him to go on PAYG for £15 he will get unlimited txts and calls to other 02 users and they will let him keep his number.

I still think a SIM only contract is the way to go if he uses the phone regularly. If he hardly ever uses the phone then PAYG would be better.

the problem is, the contract is in is sons name and has been advised to change over to his own name, hence the idea of PAYG thus he doesnt need to have a credit check. I assume if he transfers his number to a sim only in his own name he will need a credit check? which is where the problem is.

ASDA PAYG is 8p/min and 4p texts so it all depends on his usage really.
