I've got a Humax Freesat+ box, connected to the AV1 socket of my Sony CRT TV by a SCART lead. So, no HD.

However, when I switch from any SD channel to BBC HD, there is a ten second delay - and then the picture becomes brighter and sharper. Checking Humax settings after this happens, I find the RGB setting is greyed out. Any idea what causes this, please?

It only happens with BBC HD. Nothing changes when I try Luxe HD.

Changing back to an SD channel, the extra brightness & sharpness immediately "switch off" - and the RGB setting returns to black.

I am amazed you find the picture better during HD as during HD transmissions the RGB output is disabled by the broadcaster leaving only the composite video output. This is the worst quality connection of all but it appears that you prefer composite to RGB or for some reason your Tv works better with composite. Solution is simple connect the TV to the 3 RCA phono sockets (a simple scart adaptor and 3 rca phono cables will be required) which will output composite all the time.

BBC HD and ITV HD when viewed in Freesat mode do not allow the channel to be viewed via RGB scart (something to do with reducing the quality to prevent good copies being made or something silly like that) however it takes the Humax about 10 seconds to swicth the scart to composite mode.

Like grahamlthompson I am surprised at your statement about composite being brighter and sharper.

Is it possible that the TV remembers different settings for different inputs and that this is causing the apparent difference between RGB and composite?

Being new to this Forum, I originally posted my message to an existing thread in Terrestrial/Personal Video Recorders/Humax.

The messages there are from people who found CVBS gave them a clearer & brighter picture than RGB. Somebody then posted a comment about how CVBS can "echo" an image - thus giving the illusion of a brighter picture.

So, I guess that's what's happening in my set-up.

Thanks for the information.

I also have my humax pvr connected to a CRT tv but in my case it is a JVC 28"
in switching from the golf on BBC2 to BBC HD I get a different effect - the picture at first seems the same as before then after the slight delay it gets darker eg more saturated green.
however my AV1 ( or EXT1 as JVC call it ) only has RGB or VIDEO input choice.
I am very happy with the picture on CRT and do not suppose a 26" lcd tv would be big enough to notice a much better picture.
