Will Matt Smith start filming this year?
If I recall correctly, David Tennant said he had a few weeks left of shooting his final episode - he admitted it made him a bit tearful so I assume once the final Tennant show is completed the production team will start work on Smith's Who. The filming starts in summer and lasts for about nine months. The long schedule was claimed to be the main reason why Christopher Eccleston decided to quit the show after just one series. 13 episodes take about three quarters of a year to film. Must be quite a demanding schedule. I suspect Tennant's decision to quit was partly due to the long filming schedule. He has less time to do other work.
As said filming for Series 5 starts in July.
Matt Smith will probably be brought in before then to film his side of the Regeneration scene though I suppose they could leave it till he's onset fulltime (depends on where the Regeneration takes place).
Of course we'll get an announcement on who the new assistant is and see the Doctors new outfit before July, maybe around May.

It would be nice to think that Matt Smith will be in to film a regen... they've yet to manage it. DT came in a few weeks after and then due to filming commitments John Simm and Derek Jacobi did not meet on set. It will make for a great Confidential afterwards eh?

According to someone who claims to be in the know, MS has ALREADY filmed the regeneration scene. Exciting!

They might of done already, but are keeping it a secert untill they have to say, for example we could be having an old companion back back like Michelle Ryan, heck even Catherine Tate could come back, i guess only time will tell.

There's no way CT will be back as the full time series 5 companion

I do think it's likely that they have got their new companion already but we won't be told for a little while yet.
