Moving from Sky+ to Humax HDR Dilemma
OK so I have a ROI Sky+ sub and it costs me 318 euro a yr and I can get a Humax HDR for 320 euro. I can live without the ability to record RTE1/2 as I should be able to go back to analogue and DVD for that. Also I'm currently missing the ability to record BBC3/4 ITV1-4 on the ROI sub and I quite fancy BBC HD and ITVHD. As such I'm happy to ditch Sky as we only really watch all the FTA channels anyhow.
But here's the question - I've waited 5 months to see if the Freesat PVR market would change and it hasn't. So should I wait a little longer? I read that some say the Humax GUI isn't the best - lots of button presses etc esp when coming from a SKy box. I could live with these sort of things but my wife wouldn't be too happy if it didn't have the ease of use the Sky+ box does. Also the remote seems truly terrible and that they seem to be some bugs/issues with the firmware that Humax may or may not fix in a future release. Now I realise that the Sky+ forum has a list of people having issues with the Sky+ box but I've had a faultless bug free Pace Sky+ box for the last 18 months so the last thing I need is to buy something that fails to do everything equally as well as the Sky+ box does at present. Can any ex-Sky+, now HDR owners tell me this is the right thing to do?! I'm conscious that by keeping Sky for another 12 months I'm still I'd have spent the same as not buying the Humax outright... So on that note are the Humax competitors likely to get pvr boxes out in the next while? Was the RealDigitalTV PVR ever a reality or just a bit of made up hype? I don't want to buy a Humax and then wish I'd have waited another month or 2 for a better PVR... Cheers |

If you're spending 318 Euros a year on a subscription you obviously have a lot more than a basic subscription, so you're going to lose a LOT of channels if you drop to Freesat - why not drop the subscription to the minimu, where you still get many more channels than Freesat, including recording, for not too much.
But if the Freesat channels is all you need, then the boxes are pretty good - not as easy or intuitive to use as a Sky+ box, and the remote is MUCH poorer - but it's a nice box to play with. There 'should' be some alternatives later this year, but to be honest, Humax are usually one of the best - although they have damaged their standing in the trade by their bizzare and unfair distribution practices. |

Cheers for that suggestion. True I'm on the 4 mix package at €26.50 (nice Euro exchange mark up Sky from £19.50...) so that'll would save a bit of cash alright.
To be honest not being able to record BBC3/4 and quickly flick through the ITVs etc is more where I was coming from. If the ROI sub had that ability I'd certainly not think about moving to a Freesat PVR until later on in the year once others are in the market. |
