The "Songs of Praise" effect - discuss
Independent report 9/12/03
I was already aware of the recent influences of Radio 2 and both Parky's shows (Will Young for instance) but this was a bizarre new one on me. Is the music market splintering further into specific niches thus making the "mainstream" album and singles charts, as well as their traditional "arenas" redundant? G |

actually. funny this should come up.
I flicking through channels on Sunday. Stopped at BBC cos there was a young lady singing(live, not miming) really well, so well I listened to her whole performance and really enjoyed it. Then I clicked my 'i' button and found out I was watching songs of praise!. Was even more weird, because this girl would wipe the floor with most of the final 12 of this years pop idol, she had such a great voice. cant Remember her name though!. |

The Songs of praise effect is real - it's got a bigger audience than TOTP. When Hayley Westenra appeared, singing "Heaven" on January 4th, her album (which was on the way out of the charts by then) shot up from 28 to 14... then resumed its slide. That jump must have put over 10,000 on its sales, compared to where it would have been (maybe around 40). Also, by then, it had already sold 700,000 so appearances when it was first released would have had a far bigger impact.
Regarding Lauren Waterworth, I heard her sing on Radio 5 (Simon Mayo) just after 2pm today. Very nice it was, too! Her new single Butterfly Kisses is out today so they've given her 4 days off school to promote it lol. You can usually get replays of the shows on the BBC Radio5 website. She also has an album out, Beyond Her Years (which I haven't heard). Her voice and especially her expressiveness is excellent for a 14 year old. A star in the making? Maybe, just maybe... Nice one, Pete Waterman. |
