I've set up my Gmail account on my phone (Samsung J700) and the email profile info Virgin sent me [1] (mainly for the purposes of Twitpic), but it doesn't appear to like either sending or checking mail - even with a strong signal. Checking takes ages, then I get "Email connection timeout". Sending fairly quickly informs me "Email sending failed".

Here are my settings:

Profile name: Virgin WEB
APN: goto.virginmobile.uk
Login ID: user
Password: (blank)
DNS1: 0.0.0.0
DNS2: 0.0.0.0

Virgin don't appear to provide any email DNS info - I have a nagging suspicion the phone will need DNS info to send email...

Oh, and my Gmail account info (just to discount that as a cause!):
Mailbox name: Google
Mailbox type: IMAP4
My email information: *****@googlemail.com
Incoming email server: imap.googlemail.com
Outgoing email server: smtp.googlemail.com

And before you ask, I have logged in to the GMail web interface (from a proper computer) and enabled IMAP access!

You need to set the security for GMAIL. Use SSL/TLS.

(The DNS is fine, the address will be found automatically)

Aha...

After much searching around I finally discovered the SSL options - hiding near the bottom of the server settings pages

And I've just managed to send and receive - Twitpic is now displaying the picture I uploaded...
