Hi,

I have a Nokia 6288 which has been on 3 network for 18 months, until a few weeks ago when I moved to Asda mobile. Since then I've noticed that I am having to charge my battery every couple of days, as it's running down quite quickly. I thought the original battery may be starting to deteriorate, so I bought a new one the other day (from a market stall - not original), and after giving it a good charge installed it in the phone, but the same thing has happened - second day and the battery is two thirds drained.

Is this something to do with the Asda network? I had very bad reception in certain areas with 3, which is why I changed, and searching for a signal in these areas certainly used up battery power, but the signal strength seems fine with Asda, so I can't imagine it's having to search as often as it did with 3.

Just updating this thread in case anyone has any answer to this.

I am still having to charge my phone every other day. I usually put it on charge overnight, but I have had to use the car charger a couple of times, just so that I can guarantee having a charge for the day. Even so, there has been a couple of occasions where I've been out of contact in the middle of the day as the battery has given up. Once it gets to half charge it goes down rapidly even if not used.

I've switched off everything I can think of that wasn't already off but this is still happening.

The other day I decided to test this by buying £5 of credit on a T-Mobile sim card. I charged the battery up overnight on Friday night and the charge has only just gone down by a quarter on the indicator icon and it's now Tuesday. I even left it on overnight one night, which I don't normally do. I have sent a few texts and made one call. The only thing running out now is the credit!

This has to be a network issue, but a call to the customer service department gave me no joy - I have been advised to send in my phone for testing, for which they make a charge. There is nothing wrong with the phone. It worked fine on 3 (apart from a bad signal in certain areas) and has only started doing this from the day I put the Asda sim in (which uses the Vodafone network). And it obviously works fine on T-Mobile.

What is happening?

You mentioned that on 3 you had a patchy signal, if so you may have been on oranges backup 2g signal and as a result used much less power. If you're getting a strong 3g signal on asda mobile now, your phone will be using more power even when not in use. You could try to switch phone to 2g mode to see if that helps. Unfortunately three disabled this function on my old nokia n95 so the same may be the case with you.

Keowny, thank you for your reply.

When I was with 3 I had trouble getting a signal when on holiday, namely Norfolk and Devon. On my return from one of the trips, I went into the shop and mentioned this. Of course, they made lots of excuses and said that they could check the coverage if I gave them the postcode. I didn't have the postcodes, as it was quite a widespread issue throughout the length of my holidays. They then said that I could change the network in the settings by choosing manual operator selection rather than automatic. I didn't really get chance to try this again, as shortly afterwards I made a decision to change to Asda. I got the phone unlocked by 3 and thought all would be OK.

I have tried to change the settings to manual on the Asda network, but that made no difference. Also, in the Network Mode settings I only have Dual Mode, so I think your suggestion may not be possible, if that's where that setting is supposed to be. I had read something about that the other day and checked it out. Someone else said they didn't have the choice of settings that were being recommended. I guess it's an issue of the phone still having some remnants of 3 remaining. I'll know next time to get an unlocked phone from an independent retailer.

Anyway, the battery is still going strong with the T-Mobile sim in!! Five days and counting. Still a quarter of the charge remaining. I've sent more texts than normal this week, just to try and wear it out, but it's not happening.
