your tolerance levels have probably increased, which means that you don't notice the effects the alcohol is having on your body so much. However you look at it, generally having that amount every single day isn't good for you.

If you can take or leave it and don't go on benders, you're probably not an alcoholic. Either way, having a few nights without drinking a week, is a good idea, as is cutting down how much you drink on the weekends (8 probably counts as binge drinking, which is worse for your health than moderate drinking). Alcohol increases depression and erratic behaviour. It can be a slippery slope to being an alcoholic and you may be on the way to it, with that amount of regular drinking. Try to think of the money you save and you'll be keeping your girlfriend happy, too! good luck.

The risks to you:

Raised blood pressure which increases the risk of Stroke; (8+ units in one go doubles the risk of a stroke), stomach disorders; depression and emotional disorders; cancers, particularly of the mouth, throat and gullet; hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver; malnutrition; accidents, at home, at work and on the roads; suicide.

No, but it proves the Government arbitrarily make up limits.

Not really.

Ethanol. Ethanol (alcohol) is the most common cause of cirrhosis in the United States (see Table1). Over three-quarters of Americans drink ethanol. The amount necessary to cause cirrhosis differs based on gender and nutritional status, and the relative risk of alcoholic cirrhosis increases with greater amounts of alcohol consumption. It has been estimated that alcoholic cirrhosis develops in women drinking at least 20 grams of alcohol (2 units) a day for 5 to 10 years, and in men drinking at least 40 grams per day (4 units) for the same period.

A 12-ounce can of beer, 5-ounce a glass of wine, and a 1.5 ounce shot of hard liquor all contain between 10 and 20 grams of ethanol. Malnutrition and infection with hepatotropic viruses may also increase the risk of cirrhosis.

2-3 pints a day: small, moderate drinker

5-6 pints a day: binge drinker, on a downward spiral

8-9 pints a day: alcoholic

I'm in my thirties and I would say that I drink more out of habit rather than boredom i.e. I'll have a beer when I'm on the PS3 / watching TV / surfing net.

However, your responses are interesting and I guess that yes, I could cut back my drinking.

I think I shall propose to my friend that we have a "let's not drink during the week" policy to keep our lovers and more importantly, our livers happy! ”

I used to drink everynight, usually a bottle of wine or more

Well, I've now gone 4 whole days without alcohol and NO withdrawal problems at all (which given my previous habit of a stupid amount of booze per week is amazing)

Like Alexia1 said in her post, I'm sleeping better and feel loads better.

Replaced the demon-alcohol with Becks Alcohol Free beer which is quite a good alternative.

Deciding to stop drinking is the best thing I've ever done
