Ideas For Gourmet Breaks
Anyone suggest somewhere I can go for a gourmet break?
Have looked at some of the Michelin starred Hotel/Restaurants and also a break to Cornwall. Would love somewhere where I could eat in 2 or 3 different places over a weekend. |

Bray would be the obvious answer - 2 Michelin starred places there. But you would have to book months in advance.

A bit obvious, but London?
We sometimes do a foodie long weekend, stay in Claridges and have a lunch and dinner reservation for the three days in different places that combine with seeing the city. We leave one night free and see where the Concierge can get us in, to leave an element of surprise! |

Yes, I thought London would be too obvious too, which is why I did not recommend it - but really, it is top notch for food and entertainment, isn't it?
A group of us go there once a month, trying out different sorts of cuisine and there are some lovely restaurants, not particularly expensive, that give you gourmet food from around the world. The other thought is abroad. You could quite easily get to Brussels or Bruges, Paris or Lille and there are tons of places there that are good. |

Mmm, I love going to Bruges! I salivate at the thought of steak washed down with a bucket of Hoegaarden! Great idea SallySally, and it's got some great little hotels with fab restaurants too. My favourite place there is the tea room which serves chocolate with everything, and the most amazing cakes. I'm hungry now!

Belgium is the only country to have cappuccino in!
Whipped cream topping with flakes of chocolate. Oh yum. Must go again soon! |

If you like seafood, the Karmeliat is lovely.
You have to go for tea at http://www.deproeverie.be/ the cakes are lush! You could spend several hours in there and it's good for depositing a husband and shopping whilst going along the chocolate shops on that street. We found for lunch the best places are on the edge of the town near the fountain. You can get great steak and creme brulee and they are populated by more locals rather than tourists (although everyone seems to have a small dog in a bag in those places )We also love getting kitchen 'stuff' from a shop called Dille and Kamille on one of the squares, and there's a great Alessi shop which always seems to have lots of kitchenware offers on. Just before you leave, there are some great delis to stock up on cheeses and meat. They tend to be run by quite scary matronly old ladies who will shout at you if you don't hurry up with your order, but the quality is fab. Enjoy, I love it! |
