Connecting TV to laptop
loumad19

I have recently purchased a new 32" TV for the bedroom but it appears not to have any VGA socket. Anyone any ideas on how I can connect up the laptop? The TV has one HDMI port and 2 scart sockets, an AV socket and DC socket. That is it - my own fault for buyer a cheaper TV I suppose!

I have seen scart to VGA cables but not sure if they would work. Any advice greatly appreciated.

They don't really, and even if they do, the quality is absolutely appalling.

Assuming you're not using a laptop?, you could buy a video card with an HDMI or DVI output.

Ahh, but Nigel he is trying to connect a laptop.

It would be helpful, OP, if you told us what laptop you have, as it would help us give you practical advice.

I hope I am not being rude here, but while you are waiting for the OP to respond, can you advise me on something please?

When I connect my HDMI lead to my TV, for a split second my desktop icons appear, then the TV screen goes to my Dell XPS screen without the icons. few seconds later I can see my cursor on the TV screen, but not on my laptop I have only used the lead once before and it was fine - is it a dodgy lead do you think?

Thank you in advance and apologies to the OP for hijacking your thread

If you move the cursor across the active screen (with icons), does it appear on the other screen> If so, you're graphics card is set up to be two desktops wide, rather than one desktop repeated on each screen. You can change this behaviour in the Display Settings advanced properties.

You should be looking in the display properties/advanced to determine the relevant options. It tends to change from graphics card to graphics card, but it will be something like "Theatre Mode" and "extended desktop" mode.

Can't help further than that. It should be in the GCs manual, somewhere.

This question comes up so very frequently it should be a sticky.

loumad, it's going to cost you about £150 for the box, cables and delivery to do what you want to do. LINK Are you sure you shouldn't just take the TV back and buy a better one?

My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite Pro A100 - I had a Samsung TV with VGA connection and all was fine, then I moved it downstairs and bought an Acoustic Solutions one because it was on offer. Only realised later it doesn't have VGA socket.

Take it back to Argos and get your money back, they aren't very good TV's anyway - spend a bit more and get a set with a VGA socket on.
