Has anybody tried this?

I'm curious if the encryption key is unique to each device (perhaps an algorithm involving the serial number) or if there's enough data in the three files for any box to deduce the encryption key and decrypt the data.

Yep, I've got that too. Obviously the key is based on the actual device it's recorded on then. It let me copy it fine though, despite the red cross icon on the version on the USB stick.

Encrypted won't play properly from the usb even if it's the same stb it was recorded from. Unencrypted plays back fine.

Yeah sorry I did originally post that it worked, but I've got about 5 different "BBC HD Previews" in my media list, and I clicked the wrong one!

It doesn't work, indeed.

Interesting. So maybe this is a one-up the Panasonic recorders will have on the Humax- that you will be able to archive an HD recording to a blu ray which presumably will play on any blu ray player but you won't be able to copy the file off the blu ray disc onto a PC's hard drive/DVD/another blu ray disc?

I wonder if these "rights holders" would be happy with the encryption that blu-ray offers and if you'd be able to play the disc on any blu-ray player.

It might be locked down to such an extent that you can only replay what you've recorded to blu-ray on the device you recorded it on.

I don't think that will be the case- surely the point of a portable disc is you can play it on any player that supports the copy protection? What I don't know is whether the copy protection support is on all blu ray players including computer drives and PS3s- anybody know?
