There are things about the show which are an open secret, eg that the office isn't his real office, his secretary not his real secretary, the taxi walk is filmed before the first task, etc. This isn't one of them. Sir Alan has confirmed in interviews (eg with JRoss) that he makes the decisions. So to believe this theory we have to believe Sir Alan himself is lying. Not impossible, of course, but it does put it into the realms of conspiracy for me.
I would imagine it's as Inspirations suggests: He gets an idea of who he definitely won't employ very quickly and so, in the early weeks at least, has a pool of expendables. It does seem very much the case, though, that he sometimes chooses very odd criteria and is sometimes very inconsistent - you feel you know exactly who's going because of what he has said and done in previous episodes and then he ignores the very things he has been saying are important or applys the 'rules' in a completely contradictory way. |

I think two important points are being missed here -
1. Sir Alan as a general rule does not have any control over which team wins each week. Most of the tasks create a clear winner in terms of how much profit was generated. This is down to the teams themselves and neither Sir Alan or the production team can manipulate this. Even when profit and loss does not play a part he often consults experts and uses their insights, along with reports from Nick and Margaret to make the win / lose decision. I can't recall an episode where the best team were deemed to lose, one is usually in a totally different league. 2. Sir Alan can only choose who is fired from whoever is brought back into the boardroom. This is the choice of the team leader and often they bring the wrong candidates back. The choices often seem to be more personal than logical. The outcome tonight may have been very different had the other two been brought back for instance. I don't think the conspiracy and saving certain characters theory works when you take this into consideration. |
