TBF, I don't understand why she should be bothered anyway. What does she think a gay man is going to do to a 6 year old? Corrupt him? I think not. There is far more likelihood that he's goign to meet dangerous heterosexual people. What is more damaging to her son in the long run, is that she's assuming stereotypes and promoting discrimination. Kids will find their own level generally as long as you allow open discussion. My daughters, at twelve, are beginning to make more sense of what goes on and what they find ok, but that's only because we allow them to make their own minds up.

If the quotes are correct, absolutely nothing wrong or immoral with what she said.

If you're going to make a discriminatory comment and publicly offend other people without justification, then "just my opinion, sorry" frankly doesn't cut it.

I'm interested to see exactly what Mona says, but just from reading a couple of posts here, I am truly saddened. At least, I suppose, the majority of people can see how this type of comment is hurtful. Dear me.

Wow, it's amazing how quickly you can go off someone. It never ceases to amaze me how seemingly intelligent people can hold such stupid views.

When it comes to what parents want for their children they dont need a valid point! Its a matter of what they want for their children.

But is it the best thing for their children or society in general? How can we hope for a more tolerant society if parents continue to pass these values on to their children, who in turn will pass them on their children and so on and so forth.

I find it offensive that some here are saying that her comments are part of her being black therefore criticism of it is racist! Being black DOES NOT mean being homophobic.

Any way she's obviously thick if thinks that she and her family have never come across a gay man before. How does she know the sexuaality of the person driving her taxi, serving her food etc. ? Too stupid to win!

No they don't need a valid point but if you are going to say such things on a Forum like DS then being able to back up your opinion with reasons would be helpful as others might well have counter opinions which might make the person see another point of view .

Unfortunately we arent a "tolerable" species. Everything about our nature inspires us to dislike anything different you arent going to see a change within the next few generations. But lets be honest none of it is helped by the favouritism showed by local government towards minorities, such as the incident in which the grandparents of two young children were told they couldnt keep their grandchildren since they were going to a gay couple. That inspires anger so the people who really need to be challenged are government officials and to be told to leave everything alone. You cant enforce social change. It is going to get worse.

Why don't they need a valid argument? Responsibility for a child cannot be used to condone any course of action or the holding of any belief. Indeed if anything, the responsbility necessitates being able to properly reason what is best for one's child and not adopt prejudiced assumptions.

so if they think whipping their children is the best thing for them, that would be okay with you would it?

What are you talking about? If your referring to discipline we have already seen the consequences of government telling people what is right and wrong. I personally don't see why we have Gay clubs that doesnt bring about positive change or acceptance only segregation.

what i am talking about is the fact that you claim parents should pretty much be able to do as they please...be that abuse them emotionally, physically, sexually...whatever, if that is 'what they want for their children'

Im sorry but you've lost the plot. Going to extremes doesnt give you a stronger voice. Im talking about parents beating their children get some perspective!

As far as values and opinions, they do anyway whether we agree or not.

How quickly will two men pulling each other be lynched in a straight club?

Also, what are the chances of finding another man to pull in a straight club anyway? Do you just go up to every man and ask them if they are gay, risking a punch to the face?

So are gay clubs just a pulling ground?

I'm afraid it's attitudes like yours that are preventing positive change and acceptance and fuelling segregation, not gay nightclubs which are a place for people of ALL sexualities to have some fun.

You might want to define specifically what that attitude is. Ive not made any anti gay comments but you seem to leak hate judging by most of your responses.

Sadly, you're right. Perhaps we aren't that 'tolerable'. But the word you are looking for is 'tolerant'.

Speak for yourself. I can honestly say I am far more attracted to people who are different to me than people who are similar. While we're 'thinking of the children' it's worth pointing out that children tend to be far more open to people who are different too them than adults. Prejudice is learned, make no mistake.

You deserve to be called on this one because I've never read such twaddle in my life. Did this story come from the Daily Mail perchance? I cannot believe that anyone would have the audacity to try to argue that gay couples are favoured by local gov when it comes to adoption. Gay couples are fighting an uphill battle to be treated the same as anyone else.

I disagree. The people who need to be challenged are people like you. Sexuality is like eye or hair colour. Preaching discrimination on the basis of it, here in the twenty first century deserves to be fought against.
