Which version of software are you running and what version of map did you buy?

The 300 is pretty old now and isn't capable of running the very latest software versions. Which might well have a bearing on which maps you can use. Though normally the TomTom website does try to match hardware to maps. I am assuming you used TomTom to buy the map?

As the option of last resort you could try the TomTom support route. But good luck, I know from experience that TomTom and Customer Support are rarely mentioned in the same sentence without an anagram of carp appearing before the word Customer

Just out of interest which one of those did you buy and how much did you pay?

It would seem that TomTom do offer the latest version maps for the 300, though I doubt some of the more advanced features like IQ Routes will work. But a Western Europe map direct from TomTom as a download is the very thick end of 60 quid!

http://www.tomtom.com/products/maps/....php?D=17&M=80

Mind you that is a version 8 map which is several versions on from the 7.15 map offered. Though at 99p it would be a stonking bargin.

The Western & Central Europe map, which is not available for the 300, from TomTom is nearly 75 quid

http://www.tomtom.com/products/maps/select.php?D=6&M=30

But the version on sale is a couple of generations old so maybe 27 quid is not that unreasonable.

I do wonder though where these maps come from? I can't find any way to buy a map on SD card from TomTom themselves. The last time I did that was back in 2005 I think!

What is annoying me now is the fact that I have loaded the system files onto the card and it is telling me that no maps can be found , to download maps

Do you not have the original SD card you were using before buying the new maps? That should still work fine surely?

If the original SD card does not have enough free space to download new maps then you can always clone it onto a higher capacity card. The easiest way to do this is with a card reader attached to your PC but it can be done with the TomTom.

Either put the card in a reader or use the USB connection from TomTom to PC. Fire up My Computer and you will see the card as a drive, quite possibly called TomTom. Make sure My Computer is configured to show all files including Hidden (Tools -> Foleder Options -> View tab -> Show Hidden Files and Folders in XP). It is vital you have Show Hidden Files turned on as there are quite a few mission critical files on the card that are hidden and so could be missed otherwise.

Then copy the entire contents of the card to your PC. Swap cards then copy everything back. This is something I did on a fairly regular basis with my previous TomToms which used SD cards (my 730 is all internal storage) so that i always had a working back-up card ready should disaster strike (as it once did!).

The TomTom could care less whether the card you use was provided by TomTom or is a cheap card you picked up in Tesco while doing the weekly shop - and yes I have done exactly that! Or just wipe the seemingly useless card you've bought and use that.

That is a very simple way to gain enough free space on the card to download new maps and one I have used myself a few times. But as long as all the files on the original card are safely copied the new card should work exactly as the original did. And of course you have the original as a back-up.

In fact I kept the original card well away from the device and used two shop bought cards as my working copies. Each time I used TomTom Home to update the device I would clone the currently inserted card and swap then over. I once had the TomTom trash the SD card and was suitably grateful I had a back-up card to hand!

Maps are stored in folders with the same name (ish) as the map as you have probably discovered by now . There will be a shed load of files in there if they are working. It is not unknown for the TomTom to delete the map files but leave the folder there.

For example on my 730 I have a purchased UK & ROI map and the original Europe map. I deleted the Europe map, (as it will never ever be used), with TomTom Home but it left the folder behind. No problem as the TomTom itself just ignores it.

One wonders therefore how the Europe files got deleted on the new card. in my experience the TomTom will only zap them if you tell it to. Did you check before you put the card in that the map files actually existed? If they didn't then you were conned.

If the folder is empty then it may appear you have been conned. Or if it says "activation failed" it means that it is not official and has just been downloaded of some warez site. Post a screen short of the folder of the map on the sd card.
