Does anyone else who has this model have this problem? Too often I find that when I watch a DivX file, at any given point the video will stop and the system will freeze for around 1 minute, then reboot itself and shutdown. I can't figure out if this is a firmware problem, or the system is overheating from the HDD constantly spinning.

Anyone else have this issue?

Sorry to say it but it's a Philips, and Philips quality has gone down the crapper. Here speaks a man with a blown £1200 Philips TV, a dead Philips baby monitor, and a history of dead Philips DVD Recorders: DVDR880, DVDR890, and a dying DVDR520H.

So can I ask WHY you keep on buying Philips products if they are as bad as that?

Because I worked for Philips and part of the bonus structure was huge discounts on the gear. The proviso was that you had to keep it for a year. If (or should I say when) it did break down it was easy to drop it in with the in-house techs for repair.

Eventually I could stand it no longer. I'd had enough of sitting in front of buyers and service department heads being blasted for high returns rates; nor could I stomach the hollow promises made by senior managers about how quality was improving, yet the figures proved otherwise, so I tendered my resignation.

All of the Philips gear I own is from my time working for the company 4 years ago. Apart from the Pronto's, I'll never buy another piece of Philips TV, audio or video gear again. I won't supply it to my customers unless they absolutely insist, and then only under the conditions that they accept its inherent unreliability.

Ahhh...well you have just made up my mind not to buy a philips dvd recorder I have had my eye on for a while. (thank god for DS and these type of forums!)

A lot of 'once' very reliable manufacturers such as Philips/ Hitachi etc...are not what they used to be. Years ago Philips was very reliable as I have brought Philips products in the past and I have had no problems with them - but I am going back 20+ years ago. The same with Hitachi which is now exclusive to Currys I believe and it's not the Hitachi that once was. (Another brand I would not buy these days)

The more I read these threads...the more I am set up on hanging onto my outdated retro stuff as it is far more reliable than todays cheap imitations which are just too unreliable.

Wise decision.

I can't comment on Hitachi, but Philips consumer products I wouldn't touch with a barge pole.
