I have had a HD ready tv for two years and for the first time I connected a HDMI cable to it from a new blu ray player and could get no sound from tv.I tried it with a media player also with HDMI cable and still no sound.

I have no problems with PC,component and composite connections as the sound plays ok from tv speakers. Is this something to do with digital sound or a tv fault.

Most likely the settings on the sources are wrong.

The first thing to check would be "Is sound enabled via the HDMI"
This goes for the TV and the source. Sometimes this is simple, other times it needs a bit of reverse logic i.e. sound is enabled via optical, therefore sound isn't enabled via HDMI, if you catch my drift.
Next, you need to find out what type of sound the HDMI is carrying.
Your TV will cope with plain stereo - and by extension Dolby ProLogic too because it is part of the stereo signal from certain sources.

You could also have Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Tru-HD, DTS-HD and PCM in a whole bunch of formats that are only compatible with certain types of receiving gear.

To make sense of this lot you need to know what the TV will handle, then to make sure that the player is providing the correct type of sound.
Come back to us with a bit more info about the makes and models of the gear you have, and also what the sound settings and options are.
