Could DVD's feature Teletext.
Although you're probably going to reply in hoardes and say this is totally unnecessary, is it technically possible, after all it's just a few lines on the top of the picture?
I know that DVD contains everything inbuilt, graphics, subtitles etc, but teletext on DVD's could feature something like including Ceefax on a BBC DVD etc, Teletext would be useful on games consoles though, check out the other thread in gaming about that. |

I can think of two reasons why they couldn't but i'm sure there are more (without even mentioning that it's completely rediculous)
1) those few extra lines at the top are used by the macrovision to stop you recording dvd's 2) obviously the balck and white dots at the top of the screen need to be reproduced perfectly. this is something that MPEG would be rubish at as each frame bears no relation to the previous. |

However Sky Digital manages it perfectly and it uses MPEG compression, it must be done in hardware.

Bill, what is the facination with god damn Teletext
You've asked why games don't have it and now why DVD's have it... Surely logic tells you they don't have them because they have far better methods of providing information than via some antiquanted 30 year old video text system...And as for Teletext on Sky Digital - I believe it is done as a seperate part of the channels data stream which your box lumps into that part of the picture which is out of view. Quite why Sky continue to offer it when most other digital platforms don't is beyond me - surely it wouldn't be too hard for all the EMAP music channels (for example) to put all their selection numbers on an interactive ap like they do already for The Hits on Freeview... There isn't even any point in the video text version of SkyText these days as there is now the digital version which has the same, perhaps even more content and features, yet it's still there on Sky One, Sky Sports etc. |

Thanks for that nice flame, I'm not sure how to explain why I like teletext, but have you ever read Paramount Text and Mailbox, I'm like that guy was, enthusiastic about teletext.for a few lines at the top of the picture, you can have teletext so while it's there why not use it, I don't think I;m the only one who would think that teletext on games would be a cool idea, i mean you would exactly object to it if it were there already would you? As for DVD's the teletext would be static just as the other content as the DVD is. You could pick a lot of holes with the idea of text on DVD's but on games I think it would be a useful feature. |

I believe Betamax VCR's don't have this circuitry either, so these can be used for DVD copying, though I doubt if there's anyone about stupid enough to buy pirate copies on Betamax!!! I have a ver old VCR im not sure how old but its definately from the 80's and it records from Sky Box office, Rental VHS and DVD's. Its slowly dieing though and im not even sure why it records them perfectly.

am i missing something?
if a dvd had *teletext*, what sort of things could it provide, that wouldn't already be included, and presented far more attractively, as a regular dvd *extra*? Iain

The reason Sky transmits Teletext, is because customers complained it wasn't there when SkyDigital first started, and neither was any type of digital text. So after a short while Sky enabled it.

I guess it would be a good idea if they could add it to ntl: cable in areas without interactive services.

Have to agree with Bill C on one point - Mailbox, which originated on PText, is great.
Though now you can get it at www.ptext.com..
