I was at the Glasgow gig last night...I haven't enjoyed a concert as much in ages. Support act Kid British warmed up the crowd and were ok ...their new single sounded good. A DJ also whipped up the crowd playing Ska hits from all eras but focusing on more popular choons...The Selector, Dexys, Althea and Donna and Desmond Decker all got an outing.
Then just after 21:00 The Specials took to the stage...they stormed it...hi-energy start with "Do the Dog", all the hits , an early play for "Gangsters", ..and some stunning performances incl Monkey Man, Rudy, Nite Klub, Doesn't make it alright, Man at C&A and a memorable You're wondering now which neatly ran straight into Ghost Town. I haven't seen the Glasgow Academy crowd quite so boisterous for a long time, the rude boys were out in force ( where have they been hiding for the last 30 years ) and I suspect a few tears were shed. Terry Hall and the boys were obviously enjoying themselves, Hall even managed an occasional smile and a dig or two at Spandau Ballets comeback. One encore incl some community singing to "Enjoy Yourself" and it was all over...just short of 90 minutes that proved why The Specials led the early 80s ska movement...they rocked then , and still do. For a time we all relived the summer of 81...back then thoughts were dominated by job losses, recession, racial tensions...some things never change , this wasn't simply nostalgia, The Specials appear still relevant today! Now if only Dammers can get back on board maybe we will have some new material to look forward to |

Roddy wrote some of their best songs don't forget that, it wasn't all Jerry.

Thanks Shackfan......I saw the Specials in 1981 in the legendary Glasgow Apollo and the memories stayed with me. I was transported back there this week , almost 30 years seemed to evaporate..I try to catch as many gigs as I can but this one was truly outstanding.
Pity you can't see them this time around but hopefully they will play a few of the festivals and we may get some TV coverage. Did you see them on Jools a couple of weeks ago ? a terrific performance of Little Bitch was a highlight on that. |
