BT says renew your landline contract or pay £2.95pm extra for the same service!

Hi

I have received a letter from BT confirming that my initial 12 month landline contract is coming to the end and I don't need to do anything, as they will renew my landline contract for another 12 months.

The letter says, if I don't renew it, they will charge me £2.95 exptra pm for free evening and weekend calls which currently doesn't cost me a penny extra.

However I don't wish to renew my contract, as I am considering Post Office for both landline & broadband. I don't understand why they force people to renew their contract in order to continue with their package without being charged extra.

I rang them about that and talked to someone in India and he said;

""I'll cancel your contratct sir, Is there anything else I can do for you?""

I said hang on, I don't wish to cancel my contract, I said I didn't wish to renew my contract

Amazing how clueless they are.

Is there any e-mail address I can use not to renew my contract so that I can keep the written copy of contacting them about this?

It is simple really, you renew the contract and guarantee them a further years worth of line rental payments and they will offer you something for free.

If you don't guarantee them another years worth of line rental payments they wont.

As for email addresses I'm sure that if you email cceo@bt.com they will ensure the contract won't renew so you can either pay the extra or go down to the free weekend call option.

It sounds quite simple, you dont want to renew your contract , you need to advise BT, they put you onto the (normal) 1 month notice type contract and you pay them the extra £'s, it doesnt matter if you call this cancelling or not renewing, but If you want to move to the Post Office now would be the most suitable time to do it.
If you told the offshore call centre 'you didnt want to cancel ' you may want to call again and make sure this wasnt taken as 'I want to renew '

The po are increasing prices from june 1st but I'm still saving a lot on my phone and broadband package compared to BT and Zen. Oh, and the NI? based call centre has been very good when I have rung them.

Ring back and tell you are thinking of moving to sky.

ask them to match Sky's £10 a month line rental, and they will also offer unlimited calls (not mobiles) anytime of the day, but including 0845 & 0870 fot an extra £5 a month.

They even gave me the call package free for the first 3 months. That was renewing on a 12 month contract

Thanks for that I didn't know that I could just have free weekend call option. The only option that was mentioned on the letter was evening & weekend calls for £2.95pm extra if I didn't renew

I shouldn't have to should I? I don't have to ring Sky, after 12 months, to tell them that I want to be on 1 month notice type contract.

I think it is just a cheap selling tactic to make customers to contact if they don't want to renew.

Can I ask why?

Thanks for the advice, I did actually ask him to put me through to UK based call centre and I talked to someone and he confirmed he cancelled the renewal.

Hopefully they should send me a letter of confirmation but I'll email them as well just in case!

Can I ask if you are happy with your post office phone & broadband package in terms of reliability and the service?

In terms of price their package is very attractive, as I can get line rental, free international calls and the unlimited broadband for the same price of just my BT Broadband.

That's the main reason why I am thinking of moving to post office.

Thanks for the advice but even if they matched Sky's line rental price I would still save more with Post Office. The only way I can consider staying with BT is if they match the Post Office price that would mean no line rental at all

So I can't see them matching this price.

BT were giving you a discount of £2.95 for being on that call plan,on a rolling contract, you dont want a rolling contract ? , thats fine, but you lose the discount.... A better Sky analogy would be Sky offer you 'free' movies for 3 months, the letter states if you dont want to continue watching the movies call before the 3 moths are up otherwise from month 4 onwards you will be charged for them, Sky dont ring you up and ask if you would like to keep the films or go back to your old package, its upto you to call them (OK its not a rolling contract but the onus is on you to remember and call them )
The reason I think its a good time is not because the PO are anygood, but because you have had the benefit of the BT offer and before you commit to another deal or pay £2.95 for something you were getting for free, you are 'free' to move or enter another 'rolling contract, your post suggests you intend to move from BT and you identified the PO yourself
