Is there any way to connect an iPod Touch to a mobile phone to use the phones' modem?

Hi all,

I was wondering is there any way to connect an iPod Touch to a mobile phone so that you can use the data modem which is built-in to the phone to browse the Internet, etc. using Safari on the larger screen when you don't have access to a Wi-Fi connection as I've been struggling to find a Wi-Fi connection in the places that I visit the most when I am away from home.

Many thanks,

Steve.

Yes there sure is

You need to have a windows mobile phone. I've been using WMwifirouter - it creates a wireless hotspot from your phone to which the Touch can connect.

Need to make sure you have a data plan so you dont get hit with big costs. I've got a 3 pay as you go sim - £5 a month for unlimited data.

Works like a charm - can download 10mb podcasts in 2 / 3 minutes.

Many thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately I have a Nokia 6300 phone. I was wondering if it might be possible over Bluetooth but even if that is possible I suspect that the iPod would need to be jailbroken which I am not really willing to do whilst the iPod is still under warranty.

I often need to access the web when away from home and just looking for a better way to do it and on a tight budget - I did consider one of these free netbook with Wi-Fi and 3G data deals like the ones from Vodafone but I can't afford £30 a month for the contract.

I'm really interested in the fact that you get unlimited data for £5 per month from 3 - even if there is a strict fair usage policy - I don't use it that much anyway - £5 per month for me would be very attractive - I just need the hardware.

What is the 3G data coverage like with 3 - I've heard that it's not very good.

How much would a Windows-based mobile phone cost me on a new/reconditioned pay-as-you-go basis?

Thanks again,

Steve.

Hi - not sure even with a jailbroken ipod you could use bluetooth to share a data connection.

You should be able to pick up a windows based mobile phone from ebay - the amount you pay would depend on how new a model you bought.

If you do go down this route then just make sure the phone has wifi . . O2 Xda Orbit might be a good bet . . its a couple of years old but will do the job.
As for the pay as ou go sim from 3 - it is subject to fair use but i think until you start getting to 2-3gb's you wont have a problem.

I'm on BT Total Broadband Option 3 Unlimited - I've noticed that for about £4 extra each month I can upgrade to the top package which is BT Total Broadband Anywhere and get their BT ToGo smartphone, which is a HTC S620 smartphone which I beleive is supported by WMwifirouter.

At the moment I pay Vodafone about £5 per month for pay-as-you-go topups. I could pay BT that £5, get the "free" smartphone and the inclusive mobile minutes/texts with any additional calls on my BT bill.

I appreciate that they will probably extend my contract for 12 or 18 months but I've only just renewed it a few months ago so I'll only be adding a few months on to the end.

Does that sound like a good idea? Any thoughts?

Steve.
