BB snobbery
oldmandeets
23-07-2001
has anyone else encountered BB snobbery? If you mention that you watch it, there always seems to be someone who turns up their nose and denounces it as puerile trash. Im not saying its mastermind, but its fascinating seeing how everyone reacts to the situation, especially when they come out on BBLB. Just wondering if anyone else has come across this, or is it just the people I hang around with?

Yeah I know what you mean.
I have mentioned that I watch BB to a couple of people and the attitude I got for them.
If looks could kill I wouldn't be writting this right now.
Damn the lot of them, they don't know what they are missing!

I must admit there is snobbery, but if you don't like it watch something else.

I didn't watch BB1 because it was so hyped. So I watched BB2 with no preconceptions.

I know it's not too taxing brain-wise, but its damn good entertainment. Great way to start conversation too! The House-Mates (HM) in BB2 seemed a little younger, mentally, in comparison to BB1. But HMBB2 started out as a very mixed bunch and such a wide age-range, yet there was no 'Nasty Nick' in this group. And the whole things appears less money grabbing than BB1, more about making friendships.

So all those out there who think it banal - go soak your head.

You will find that people who slag BB off, havent actually watched it. (or they will say 'I watched it for a few mins once'..!!?)

As a former professional psychologist, I find BB fascinating and highly entertaining as well. The interplay between the characters and the spontaneous nature of the whole event, guided by BB itself tells me far more about the human psyche than any number of soap operas.(for eg).
As a field study it would be invaluable, but apart from that, it's just very good entertainment as well!.

Eg Helen. She is so obviously smitten by Paul, yet I think she knows inside it is'nt going to go anywhere. Paul , since he has been out, has been constantly making excuses as to why they wont get together 'just yet'. Yes..he says he will 'go for a drink' with her, but he wont commit himself at all. I dont think anything is ever going to happen between them as far as Paul is concerned.

I hope Helen wins as well, she'd be so thrilled, but I think Brian will win it, which is ok as well, as he's a genuinly funny/nice chap, if a bit ascerbic now and then

I would be interested to know what you made of Penny most people thought she was barking mad and I must admit I found her a bit scary what would your professional opinion be.

Well, I'm not a 'professional' any more, I'm in computers now..
but, for what its worth, I liked Penny a lot. Some people in her circumstances, do react like she did. She just showed some classic syptoms of stress (slight manic state, emotional, defensive'), but ,under the circumstances, quite a normal aspect of behaviour for the situation.
People do react in different ways in the BB environment. Someone like Stuart for eg, alpha male type, will show aggression when stressed, whereas Dean will just mostly mope., although occasionally he will react manically, as below.
It was very revealing Deans reaction to having to dress up for his part in the 'skills' task, when he had to do french plaits.
He let his guard slip a bit there, when he was almost panicking at the thought he would be percieved as homosexual. 'This is what homosexuals wear' he said.
err NO Dean, its not.

I cant think of any other TV show I have ever seen that has given such an insight into how people relate to each other. Im kind of glad that we havent resorted to the kind of tactics used in the US BB, it was quite nice to actually see most people getting on with each other, except for the odd situation I kind of got the feeling that the producers would have liked more fights and drama etc but I think in the end they realised that it could still be good to watch even though things never really got too out of hand.

Ignore Frank Fury, hes one of those people who just likes to slag off popular culture. Because HE doesnt get it, he is unable to understand anyone else liking it.

yeah and charlie wolf on talkSport radio was also giving it a trashing over ther weekend as well. he even admitted to having never watched it, so great he forms his opinions after thorough research! just another example of how a certain type of people love to bash the show to make themselves feel superior.
