this is being discussed in another thread. Ithink the Rani idea is just the press picking the first female villain name they could come up with yet again

They could be putting two and two together to get five seeing as Gillian Anderson is playing opposite Christopher Ecclestone at the Donmar at the moment ?

The fact she's even 5 foot away from a previous incarnation of the Doctor may have spurned these rumours

Being a huge XF fan I really hope this turns out to be true.

Wasnt Joan Collins/Zoe Lucker supposed to be playing the Rani? wasnt Kate O'Mara supposed to be reprising the role

isnt there A Rani in 'The Sarah Jane Adventures'? wont that be too confusing for people who watch both who arent aware that there is also a timelady called the Rani? lol

There's been two.

I heard this too and read it in the Daily Express and I too hope it is true. I think she would make a great Rani, taking over from Kater O'Mara in the role.

It would be nice to see her in the next series and I think she will be great in the role.

Great choice, completely unexpected! Will she be in it? The truth is out there... (sorry!)

I don't think for a second that Moffat will bring back the Rani. Whether Gillian Anderson will appear remains to be seen. I hope so, obviously, as she's a terrific actress. If the script and character are good then it could be sensational

I reckon the Rani will be saved for season 4 - this finale is going to be more about the time lords in general & the master. She'll make a good nemesis for sure.

That would be series 5.

I can't see how the Rani would make a good nemesis despite the talents ofthe actress playing her. Sorry I'm uncompromising when it comes to that pathetic character.

“New Interview!
Posted at 8:40 AM (PDT) on Friday, May 1, 2009

From Telegraph, UK:
You would not guess she was a 40 year-old with three children, the youngest six months old. And yet she says other mothers in the park aren’t intimidated by her appearance so much as appalled at how scruffy she is. 'They look at me like, "Doesn’t she have mirrors in her house?"' Yeah, right. I should say something about her work, too, or rather her reinvention from the glamorous star of a hugely popular and long-running TV show about alien abduction to a highly respected stage and film actress. Although she returned to TV for her Bafta-nominated performance in the BBC’s Bleak House (and, if the rumours are true, will do so again as a villain in Doctor Who*), she has also been discriminating in her choice of film roles, favouring the intelligent and stylish, such as A Cock and Bull Story and The Last King of Scotland, over the commercial (even if she did manage to slip in an X-Files movie last year).
*NOTE: False - Gillian has NO plans to appear in Dr. Who.

Ok, ok I stand corrected. Series 5! I liked Kate O'Mara, but the exceedingly crap 80s format/writing destroyed the possible addition of another decent time lord enemy. Maybe open minds are needed. Everyone slated Billie Piper & Catherine Tate before they'd seen the finished product, so who knows.......

Sorry I didn't intend to offend by pointing out it is series 5, hence the smile.

I think people slating the likes of Billie or Catherine before they have been on screen was silly and lacked an open mind especially given they were playing new characters. In both cases fans were proven wrong.

However, I am not slating the actress, I am slating the possible character. You are right the Rani came during the woeful 80s when there were so many production problems with the show. However, imo the Rani was a poor concept. I'm sure Gillian Anderson could change people's minds about the character. But I think it would be a shame to saddle such a talented actress with such a flawed idea. I think there is so much scope for a new female villain that I don't see the need to bring back a very weak idea. The Master made sense to resurrect because the concept of being the Doctor's equal but opposite was strong. But the Rani was just there to be a female version.

If you think about it, John Simm was apparently spotted outside Sarah Janes house, and in SJA there is a girl called Rani. Maybe the Rani from SJA is the Rani from Dr who and maybe she has a watch with all her memorys inside and thats why the Master goes to Sarah Janes house. To get the girl to open the watch and then some how she will regenerate into Gillian Anderson!

No, it's cool, no offence taken! There were too many closed minds before the reboot proved it worked. I think most concepts that have been reinvented have worked rather well. Although a lot of people don't seem to like RTD, I think he's given most characters the right edge. Maybe he could do the same with the Rani, but who knows! I keep an open mind. Bringing back too many characters/time lords does cheapen the time war storyline & how they'll go around resurrecting the timelords will be interesting.... We'll see!

Or the young actress playing Rani has that name in SJA because its an inside joke that works here because Rani is a very common Asian girls name.....and a name that people/viewers won't have difficulty to pronounce.....

I think you are absolutely right. RTD had his tongue firmly in cheek when he decided to call the girl in SJA Rani. Because he knew it would create this sort of speculation.

Just been reading through the June issue of Total Film and they have little news flash type writing across the bottom. In amongst the 'wanted 2 confirmed' and 'T5 to get new writer' was a little flash of 'Gillian Anderson to guest star in Doctor Who'. Although this is just prob a new flash from the same rumors we've been hearing and not 'confirmed news'.

Isn't Total Film monthly? If so, funny they didn't show this in the May issue...unless there have been developments but I sincerely doubt it.

That what I was thinking!!, why mention it now after everyone else has already printed the speculation? unless they had 4 inch of space left over that needed filling!!

Nooo. It should be Zoe Lucker!

Would be so depressed if that's not the case!
