PS3 blue-ray DVDs and 5:1 audio
I have a Pioneer surround sound system and its attached to my PS3 using an optical audio cable. I use it for games and also for playing Blue-ray DVDs.
In at least a few instances using the PS3 to play Blue-Ray DVDs, I cannot get it to play in 5:1 Dolby Digital surround sound on the main feature film. Funnily enough for the trailers on the same DVD disk, and even on the opening MGM snarling lion shot, it does play 5:1. Then the main film cuts in and it start playing in Pro Logic virtual surround. Now it clearly can play in 5:1 from a blue ray DVD. It does fully work on some other blue ray disks that we have anyway. I've tried all possible combinations on my Pioneer. But I can't see that really being the problem as it does play 5:1 from these disks, just not in the main film. So is it because the audio signal for the main film cannot be interpreted by my pioneer, which I admit isn't a new one, but was a good one at the time and plays THX. Or is it some audio setting on the PS3, which seems to have quite a lot, and I admit to not knowing enough about. Is there a wizard out there with any helpful advice? |

As long as you have the DD5.1 and DTS5.1 option ticked in the PS3 menu it's just a case of making sure you have chosen the right soundtrack on the disk and the amp is autoswitching. A lot of Blu's will take the HD audio and mix into a 5.1 mix for older optical/coaxial amps to handle, it will probably be indicated as multichannel 640kbps in the PS3 onscreen display menu during playback.
