A good friend of my parents is very ill with (I think) terminal MS. He's got to the point where swallowing is very difficult.

He wants to avoid having a feeding tube straight into his stomach for as long as possible, obviously.

His wife needs some good ideas to give him a smooth, soupy, varied and tasty diet. He needs to get all his food needs from it. She says that yoghurt-type consistency seems to work best: too runny and it goes everywhere, too lumpy and he chokes.

Can anyone help with recipe ideas of maybe books or websites that could help?

This might be a better source of inspiration.

There are some really delicious soups in here. I've tried a fair few and many will fit the bill you require.

The roasted pepper one is the bees knees either hot or cold.

Complan is a trusted, fortified dietary supplement formulated to provide high quality nutrition. It provides a balanced mix of high-quality, essential protein, fat and carbohydrate to provide energy, as well as an extensive range of vitamins and minerals, and it provides a useful boost to energy even in small servings

We're buying them the soup book from Amazon as a little present. I'm sure it'll do the job!

Complan et al, they're not quite ready for. The guy can walk and talk and everything, he's not ready to be an "invalid" yet. No offence meant to anyone, but it is a big psychological step to switch from food to complan...

Incidentally, I was wrong: it's motor neurone, not MS.

Fruit smoothies are also nutritious and would help with the balance of diet as well as give a change from the savoury of soups. I often have one in summer myself instead of an evening meal.

A family member had cancer of the oesophogus and I found the following book really helpful.

"Soft Options for adults who have difficulty chewing" by Rita Greer. Very comprehensive and a great variety of recipes.

Your local library will probably have a copy or will order you one in or try Amazon or similar.
