Jamelia - The Future Of British R'n'B/Garage?

Now that finally after 4 years of making music, superstar has made her a big name - surely she can break America and save the british music industry?

I love her music, and cannot think of any other current british female artist with a better voice!

I thought Superstar was a great song, and one of my favs of the year, and I think even managed that most amazing of feats these days, of actually rising in the charts. I'm sure if she had been an established name, it would have been a no.1. Certainly better than anything Lisa Mafia and Javine have managed to date.

I think she probably needs to make a few more songs like that though, to secure her place in the UK and Europe, before she thinks about the relatively hostile, self obsessed american market.

I think it's sad in a way that we measure musical success on how well an artist does in America, it may be the biggest market it in the world, but I bet the European and Asian markets combined are bigger - markets which seem alot more UK friendly.

P.S. Dont you just hate the phrase "Breaking America"

I hate that phrase also " braking America", I don't know why so many Brittish artists fail in America as i belive we have a lot of talent over here

A certain divide has been built up between us and America over the past decade. Which is why it's so important somebody breaks america.

Jamelia has only had one other top ten hit which was 'Money' in 2000 at No.5 - Listen to it, a cracking track!

What annoys me is that we've so lost our confidence as a country that can produce new music, fashion, style and trends that we worship at the feet at any old crappy American artists (Justin Timberlake anyone?). We also only take our popstars seriously if they can "break America".

In past decades we didn't care, our music scene was too exciting for us to be forever looking over the Atlantic. Most of our artists only break America once they are past their sell by date anyway.

It seems to me that the few bands that do make it In America are not known for their record sales here

I do agree that the artists that break america are the artists that don't intend to. The only time when we can break america as a country is when we break away from their music and create our own brand.

When was the last time Jamelia released a garage record?

See this is the problem, her last single "BOUT" is alot more r'n'b/garage - but Superstar is more mainstream pop.

I think she isn't so much about the garage anymore.

she's coming out with more mainstream pop than RnB.
theirs a fair few true RnB/Hip HOP artists in the UK but they arent mainstream.

I think Superstar has been Jamelia's only POP song, I know there are other artists out there who got next to no credit, but now we have a fresh new artist -something abit stronger in the charts then alot of other rubbish.

Anybody heard her new one, Thankyou?
