It's just climbed 11 (yes, ELEVEN) place in the official charts, rising into the Top 20!!!! Argh!

And once again - WHO BUYS THIS CRAP!?

Just a guess but possibly English Rugby fans?

Odds shortened on it for Crimbo No1 too (better than Pop Idles anyways).

I assume you just mean 'Swing Low Sweet Chariot', and yes I agree, it's quite a banal cover that is wearing very thin now. That said, it was quite fitting at the time of the World Cup.

But you certainly can't write off the whole UB40 catalogue as 'crap'! I was listening to the Labour of Love collection recently, and some tracks are simply amazing. I don't think there's any person who does not like their cover of Red Red Wine. Homely Girl is one of my favourites of all time, not just from the Brummie band. They have an awesome back-catalogue -- it's a shame you couldn't be more specific about which particular UB40 you consider "this crap"

First of all, yes I do mean 'Swing Low'.

Next, if you'd read my post properly cobaltmale, you would of seen that even though I accidentally missed out an 's' it still means CLIMB 11 PLACES, RISING into the Top 20, so there's no need to tell me where it is in the PROPER charts - I listen to them too, that's why I said RISING 11 places INTO the Top 20; I did not say it went up to 11. That's also why I say 'in the official charts'! We all make spelling mistakes, and even with the mistake, it still means what I'm saying now!

I hate the other charts - WHAT'S THE POINT IN THEM! So don't give me a lecture about the proper charts, because I do listen to them and wouldn't dream about listening to any other chart because 1) They're crap, and 2) One of them is presented by Neil Fox!!!




And as for Proper Crimbo being Number One - hopefully it will, but it won't if people just download it like SOOOOO many people do.

Apologies for misreading your post (prob more to do with not being at the computer when I checked the chart on BBCi last night).

I don't LISTEN to any of them anymore (all the programme formats are flawed) but I take the BBCi/TOTP ones to be THE chart as I believe it's what Billboard uses to tell the US what our charts are (MTV used to use it too but I don't know about recently).

According to the Sun "Proper Crimbo is not even Top 5 in first day sales but The Darkness is Gary Jules is at 2 and the Pop Idles are stalled at 3 .

*red red wine* has got to be one of the most annoyingly bad songs i've ever heard. i know with music, its horses for courses and all that, but UB40 really are one of the few bands I find uniquely dire and banal and just plain gawdawful.

Loved "Don't Break My Heart" - so simple but so beautiful. Was it their song or a cover? I recall not being mad about some of the covers they did, although they always brought their unique and distinctive style to them.

Disagree with Iain (not for the first time!), I've heard far worse bands.

i do like marillion tho' - or at least when Fish was still with them. *misplaced childhood* was the first album I bought. for a fiver, in woollies.

I'm not a big fan of the Fish era to be honest, although the album artwork was better in those days.

Was it vinyl that you bought for a fiver then?

I'm quite sad for UB40. When they started out they were incredibly politically committed, probably more than any other band at the time. They released lyrically challenging music that had something quite powerful to say.

It's such a shame they are reduced to this.

it was indeed - them were the days - its the one downside to cds really - not getting fold out and inner sleeves full of artwork.

Who's to say they don't still stand by earlier releases in their original context?

Remember that as early as Summer 1983 they did their first album of covers ("Labour of Love") and the resultant No1 "Red Red Wine". Their first hits were in the spring of 1980.

A certain Mr Blair first stood for office in 1983 espousing much the same agenda.

You may be getting politically romanticised here.
