Bob Dylan - Have you been to his latest UK tour?
If so what did you think of it?

No, I haven't. I'm scared that my image of him will be destroyed if I see him live - is that bad?
My friend (a massive fan of Dylan) saw him and was very disappointed. I don't want that to happen to me. |

I heard he is terrible live, which doesn't come as a shock to me. His music is melancholy and he isn't the best singer.

A few people have said he is bad live. I think he's very overrated, too.

I'm fine with melancholy music, and I'm a fan of Bob Dylan, even if he doesn't have the greatest voice. I think it's more about the lyrics for me.

A friend of mine went to the O2 show on Saturday and thought it was amazing to see Bob, even if his voice is not what it was. He then sent me this link as an example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ePi8J8rkT0 I'm sorry, I am a fan of Bob, but I would be so disappointed if that was what I ended up with! |

"Howmanyro-OADS......................................... wouldamanwalkdo-OWN.................................... Beforeyoucancallhimama-AAAN" And his guitar solo was totally laughable... one note solo! Twang... twangtwang... twang....twang...................TWANG! I have to say that it was probably the worst gig i've been to (and i've seen Sigue Sigue Sputnik live!). |

I saw Bob at the Roundhouse in Camden and he wasn't that great! he was halfway through a song before you realised what it was! I realised I knew the words but couldn't place it, the tune just wasn't there.
He just stood at the keyboards all night, didn't play guitar, no talking to the crowd. It was my first time seeing Dyaln but the regular fans around me were very disapponited!!! |

It wasn't just me then.
I saw him on Wednesday at the NIA and I was very disappointed; I guess that I must be a fan out of time. I had bought all of his albums up to the mid 70’s and for the most part enjoyed going along with him on his musical journey and even saw him perform at IOW and Blackbush. Since then I must admit that I’ve not followed him too closely so when my other half said that she’d like to go to one of his concerts I thought that it’d be interesting to see how he is stacking up after all these years especially as I was dragged along to see Leonard Cohen last year and was completely bowled over by his show. Even at the age of seventy four he performed with energy, wit and warmth. Anyway back to Dylan. The show started with a huge sycophantic voice-over announcement and the lights went up to reveal Bob and his band in stage positions, him on the right behind a portable organ and the band arrayed in a semi circle left to centre, pretty well where they stayed all night. Without a word they went straight into the first song (don’t ask I couldn’t tell). Now I have heard that Dylan prides himself on never playing a song the same way twice but the arrangement with pounding drums and Bob’s gravelly voice more impenetrable than ever made it hard to recognise most of the numbers, and even those that I did recognise were almost a destructive version of the ones I had in my head. I don’t know who the band members are, I couldn’t make out any of Bob’s words when he introduced them; the only spoken words he utter all night (well for the 90 minutes he played for). For the most part he seemed aloof, self-absorbed and bored, as though he just wanted to get through it and away. I know that creative musicians want always to be pushing forward and not keep anchored in the past but the arrangements of his work as I witnessed on Wednesday added no new musical dimension to his songs so I don’t know why he bothers touring this show other than to make the most of the power of his name to draw an audience (and their money) while he still can. On the other hand I did see an exhibition of his paintings, I think he’d be better putting his energies in that creative expression now; they weren’t bad. |
