Need to upgrade my phone.

1) Have an iPod so don't need music facilites.

2) Have a digital camera so don't need photo facilites.

3) What I would like is good GPS.

Are there any phones that have this without me having to pay for the music and photo facilities which I would never use?

The GPS on my Nokia 5800 also seems to work pretty well with http://www.amazegps.com/welcome.php

You'll struggle to find a phone that features GPS but won't play MP3s or take pictures.

All of these have a GPS reciever http://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3...e=0&sFreeText=

I'm not expecting to find one with out those features, but I'd like my money to be paying for good GPS rather than good music or photo features.

Well the camera on the 5800 is pretty pish so I wouldn't worry about that too much .... lol.

MP3 playback is a pretty basic feature on most mobiles nowadays ... doesn't really require much additional expenditure on the hardware.

If you buy a phone with built in GPS, chances are it's going to be a smartphone and thus be pretty fully featured .... no matter which one you look at.

Since when has the iphone had good GPS?

You can pick up an N95 really cheap these days, and Nokia Maps is actually pretty awesome for a mobile phone GPS program. I've travelled all over the UK using it.

No phone is made with good GPS features in mind. Its why Tom Tom don't make SatNavs with phones in mind. GPS is just a nice added benefit to a phone, but is no replacement for actual Sat Nav.

As I don't drive I don't think a 'real' SatNav would be useful. However something built into my phone for use when walking around London would. I appreciate the difference in the two. I would describe something like Tom Tom as excellent GPS, I'm not expecting the features such as real time traffic information that offers. I looking for good GPS ie accurate poisitioning, location mapping and possibly route information.

garmin mobile XT runs fantastically on my N95-2. only problem is that the screen is a bit too small.

I think you will find that phone with gps is the future and the htc touch hd i have with IGO 8 AND TOMTOM software is as good as the standalone tomtom, plus i always have it with me and will never leave it in the car.

basically, find something with unlimited internet data option and HSDPA capabilities with google maps installed - you don't even need navigation software.

I think you'll find that's your opinion, but maybe in the future the two devices will indeed merge. However as of today the technology isn't there to make such a device superior than a standalone.

I agree it's handy to have and it helps me out when I'm in a strange city, but I certainly wouldn't replace my Tom Tom with it.

thats utter rubbish. TomTom on the phone (I've used it on the N95 and on WM devices) is as good as, and as accurate as, a dedicated satnav device.

Heck, I'd be willing to put money on them having similar GPS receivers as well.

And Remember that the original TomTom developers came from Nokia/Symbian backgrounds

the gps receiver in the phone can have advantages principally A-GPS, plus it's much more natural for it to have connectivity for traffic updates and stuff.

the main problem is the screen is too small.

What is lacking on the phone GPS devices then? The apps available - TomTom, Gamin, Route 66, McGuider, etc. are generally equal to their dedicated counterparts.

The only possible area where they lack is the screen size, but with the later mobiles (Omnia HD, Touch HD, iPhone, Nokia 5800), the screen size is no longer an issue.

Yes, I agree also with clonmult, TomTom is probably the best application for navigation, I'm using this three:
TomTom - navigation
Sportypal - mapping my runs and routes when cycling
Openstreetmap - also good mapping tool.

I used to use TomTom on Symbian, but had a few bad experiences - it decided that going the wrong way on roundabouts was a "good idea".

Also use Nokia sports tracker on the N95 - sounds like a similar application to sportypal.

Only recently seen about openstreetmap - it looks like an excellent service, growing accuracy every day.

But ultimately no more amazing than it is on other devices with GPS.
