Does anyone know where you can get nitrate free bacon and ham in the UK? I know supermarkerts in the US are starting to carry nitrate free processed meats, but I can't seem to find any in the supermarkets here that carry them. Even the organic bacon I found in Sainsbury's the other day had nitrates in them.

For those of you won't know know, sodium nitrates are preservatives, that they use in ham, bacon, etc but they are also known carcinogenics (linked to cancer in animals and an increased risk of pancreatic cancer in humans) and these days, more and more nutritionists are recommending people avoid processed meats because of the nitrates.

It's the first time I've heard about this so thanks for the info.

I'm not sure where you can find it on the high street, but I just googled nitrate free ham and there are a few places you can get it online, if that's an option for you. Here are a couple of the places:

Hope this helps.

JoJo thanks for the links. Whoever, hey didn't think about a proper butchers. I ruled out the fresh counters on the supermarket, because all that stuff is out of packets too. But your probably right, a decent butcher should have bacon thats cut straight off the pig, so not perservatives, etc. Ham might be a different story because I know some of those places just sell Ham joint that they buy in, but I'm sure there are old fashioned butchers who probably bake their own ham too. I'll have to check out a local butcher.

Why don't you buy a whole ham - it's much cheaper.

Anything 'straight off the pig" is called pork. Bacon is pork that has been cured or smoked. I reckon that most butchers use nitrites for curing if they do their own.

I doubt there are many normal high street butchers that cure their own bacon. My local butcher is fantastic and do all sorts but the bacon arrives in packets.

Best best is straight from the farm.
