I think I'm pretty good at predicting chart positions for songs, but now and again one comes along that totally throws me, and Rachel Stevens new one is one. I realise some of the lyrics aren't the greatest ever, but I thought the production on if was pretty good, and it had quite a nice sound to it. I think theres far worse records that done far better this year. I don't think the record company thought it was that bad either, else they wouldn't have made it the title track of the album.

So anyone else think it wasn't that bad either, or I have I just lost the plot on this one (swayed by Rach lust perhaps )? Or are there other reasons for it crashing and burning, growing hosility to Rachel perhaps (I'm not a big tabloid/celeb mag reader)? Or maybe the kids just thought "Funky Dory" was a lame sounding phrase, or didn't know what pop art was?

Well I thought it was good, but to be honest I think I've heard it on the radio about twice, ever, and the clubs are still paying Sweet Dreams My L A Ex, so my theory is it's not had the publicity it should have had, and was released too soon after Sweet Dreams My L A Ex.

I'm with you. Although I'm by no means a Rachel Stevens fan and deplore her reluctance to sing live, I thought it it was a decent-enough track and deserved a Top 10 placing.

It may have been the wrong sort of track to release during Xmas.
Perhaps a chart battle with Hannah (or any ex-S-Clubber) might save her (worked for Geri!)

I've just heard that her album of the same name has entered the charts at no.81!

Ouch.

A RE-entry, surely??? I can't believe that even with the awful placing of Funkydory the album would sell so few copies...

I think that's one of the worst songs of the year, not surprised it stiffed. The lyrics are laughable.

To be honest I think more people are interested in looking at Rachel than listening to her.

Rachel who? She's surplus to requirements. Why have another Holly Vallance? Pointless.

although its nuthin to be proud of, "funky dory" the album reached no9 in the album charts, and my LA ex was in the top 3 for three wks. she blames LA ex for taking the publicity and airplay away from her new single. so not amazing but not a faliure either.

Your thread title assumes the lower in the charts a track gets the poorer a song it is. This simply isn't the case. There are many tracks even missing the Top 75 that are gems, of far better quality than some Top 10 songs.

As for Funky Dory, i prefer it to the previous one.

I agree with you, alot of songs I like do quite badly, either because they don't have the publicity, air play, out of fashion, etc. I realise there's alot of factors, not just the song. But with the PR machine and profile she has, it was a big surprise for it to do so badly. I mean it might well be a record for one single to come in at 1 and the next to do so badly in comparison (ok , maybe not, but quite rare).

I agree with you, sweet dreams was a much better song, just I thought funky dory sounded more top 10 than top 30, so I was just wondering what went wrong, or whether I had just got it wrong.

She was still heavily promoting 'My LA Ex' for Record of the Year at the same time Funky Dory was released - daft move on the part of her record company. That said, if they'd delayed it any longer they'd have had to lay it off til after the New Year and she'd be forgotten.

Both songs are average and it's only the pathetic 'on/off' relationship stories between her and the ex-Hollyoaks actor which give her any profile.

Selling music solely on the strength of being a fairly good looking pop-singer, it must be difficult where there are already at least five people doing the same thing better in every way than you.

Actually, forget all the excuses above... a song with the lyrics 'You're a work of pop art, wanna hang you on the wall' probably never was likely to go top ten

i aint the biggest fan of ms stevens.

shes a fit petite bird and all but

she's just another run of the mill singer with a mediocre voice.
she needs a good marketing plan to sell her image and very good looks which she has.

look at the spice girls, again not the most tanlanted of singers but the marketing budget was massive and they were constantly "in your face"- be it always bloody playing on the radio, in the tabliods, tv, etc

then look at christina agulara, her newest song really does do justice for her amazing vocals. (although she is a sexy bird ).
i would rather listen to her than spice girls or stevens.

Mr Simpson's favourite beer springs to mind here

DUFF!

Good job then it hasn't been played to death like her other record.

I'd rather listen to Black Lace

although funky dory probably never desrerved to be no.1 the fact that the cheeky girls made the top ten shows that these charts obviously dont reflect the quality of the song. to me funky dory wil always be better than anythin the cheeky girls come up with.

I'm not strictly talking about Rachel Stevens, but a lot of good acts are failing to get any attention at the moment, (Muse & Madonna are two recent examples) probably due to the media fascination with ex pop idol/fame academy contestants. It really is very sad for music fans.

yes I know what you mean, acts like The Cheeky Girls are degrading to UK music, still they are least had PopStars behind them, what did the FastFoodRockers have?
