CI Slot. What's it for?

This time i've got it in the right part of the forum.

I got myself 1 of the foxsat HDR'S on monday. Nice piece of kit indeed. Just wondering though what use (if any) is the CI slot good for? I know some intergrated digital TV'S (inparticulair freeview) need the slots for top up/setanta but is it ever gonna be of any use to us freesat people?

Many have reported that a Freesat From Sky Card and a dragon cam will allow the viewing and recording of encrypted but Free To View channels in Non Freesat mode (notably CH4 HD)

It's unlikely to be of much general use (like the CI slots on TVs are not either!). Some people have used this with unofficial Sky CAMs (as there are no official ones!) to receive C4HD and/or subscription channels. It could also be used for foreign channels on other satellites.

As no other Freesat STB has a CI slot there are unlikely to be any Freesat targetted channels in the near future.

OK. Kind of curious about it I guess. (Unofficially it could be used but officially it's useless basically)

It's there for the day that Sky grow up and allow you to use the satellite box of your choosing along with an NDS cam plus Sky card to access their overpriced TV service.

I suspect that the CI is there because Humax will be selling a very similar non-Freesat model for the rest of Europe where buying a CAM for the subscription satellite TV provider of your choice is a normal occurrence.

It's older than the hdr, the hdr is designed from the icord

They can't watch a fifth (but can watch a previous recording). To record 4 at once they have to be contained on only two transponders.

There's no reason why with a firmware upgrade the hdr can't do the same. In effect it can already write 3 programmes to the hard disc. Assuming you have 2 cables, try instant recording BBC 1 CI 951, BBC HD 108. Now try watching any other channel and pressing pause. You should be able to pause live TV indicating the tuner is writing to the hard disc. How's it work, simple same as the icord one tuner can demux two channels from the same transponder carrier and as 951 and 108 are in the same transponder recording them only uses one tuner. The second is free to do what you want. The same trick allows you to watch certain live channels when recording two. Any channel on the same transponder as either recording can be watched.

I wouldn't say that it's very similar. The layout on the back panel is very different & it has two CIs. http://www.humaxdigital.com/global/p...foxsat-hdr.asp
