Hey all.

My Apple iPhone (the infallible ultimate secure device) just sent me a notification in which the home screen was blanked out with a green bar along the bottom saying "Dismiss".

The text in the middle of the screen said:

"Your a cu*t!"

Has someone hacked me? . . .can they get all my details?

I couldn't push the home key, all I could do was tap the Dismiss bar and it went away.

If you send a text and start it with !! followed by the message, it will, on some phones, (the receiving one) cause the message to display straight onto the screen without having to do anything. Maybe it's something along those lines? Ask a mate to text you putting !! before the message, send it to you, and see what happens.

Its called a Flash SMS, many modern phones can send them (the !! Doesn't work on all networks) just by selecting Flash SMS as the message type.

So one of your "friends" has sent this.

Interesting, I agree that reporting nuisance texts to O2 is a good thing. However, how will "flashing" the phone stop the messages being sent?

Because they are not standard text messages. It's like a virus has been installed on your phone, which allows someone to access your data (like spyware).

Yeah, it's not a hack. Don't report it to Apple, don't restore your phone.

As has Been said it's a flash SMS. Foe example O2 use them for showing your balance on PAYG after you send a message or make a call. I get that exact same screen minus the profanity when I text someone.

Utter nonsense.

Its just someone the OP knows sending a childish but ruse message.

There is nothing sinister about FlashSMS, phone companies use them all the time. Why are you scaremongering?

If you know someone on T-Mobile then get them to send a text starting !!

Alternatively, find someone with a phone that will send Flash SMS, eg most Nokia.

I don't know why people scaremonger and try to cause you upset. Its not treating you with respect to suggest that its a virus when it clearly isn't.

Yes. It's a flash message. Usually on most phones it still shows the sender at the top but on the iPhone it doesn't.

On o2 you send a message starting with *go

Ie : *goIm watching you!

i used to send the occasional flash message form my 3220, until i discovered that samsung phones display the message with a red heart.

which lead to an unfortunate misunderstanding.

I sent one to my mums samsung.

It comes up as a flash message but with your name "Aaron" at the top.

The iPhone of course just keeps the whole thing hidden and private. . . whereas every other brand puts the name or number there.

Will that's alright.

If the message I received saying:

"You're gonna get bummed hard" came up with a big heart - well. . . I don't know what I'd have done.
