Burgled :( - iPod & iPOD Library Question

Ok, so I was burgled a couple of weeks ago and the thieves took all my computers/laptops but didn't get my Touch. I've just got a new laptop and want to - hopefully - synch my Touch without losing everything on it.

When they burgled me last time they got all my iPods and I remember emailing iTunes and asking them if I could have all my purchased songs replaced to my library, which they did.

Basically, I've got (with the exception of a lot of movies ) all my songs on my Touch but I don't want iTunes to wipe them all. Will it ask me if I want to synch all the things on my Touch therefore creating a new library??? This will be the 3rd computer I've had to synch I'm not plugging it in until I'm sure of what will happen.

Thanks in advance

unfortunately you can't transfer from your ipod to your computer, it will ask if you want to synch - if you say yes you'll lose what you have on your ipod. If you log onto itunes with your account details your purchases will be added to your itunes account on that computer

It is possible to copy songs from your ipod to your computer, but apple have made it fiddly.

Thanks. I'm glad I asked first otherwise...

I can't believe I've got to start all over again; AGAIN. What's the point of iTunes asking if you want to synch, but not allowing you to copy what's on your iPod into an empty library?

I hate thieves.

If you sync it into a fresh installed version of Itunes, it will detect that there are purchases on your touch and ask if you want to copy them, say yes at that point or you will lose them, itunes will then copy them back from your touch to your newly installed itunes

You will lose anything that has not been purchased though.

Over the weekend I formatted my PC, I installed itunes and when I synced my touch it asked the above.......

also I would first login to itunes and authorise your PC first.

hope that helps.

Thanks. Have emailed iTunes support about the purchases and about the other more pressing problem about losing everything on my other two iPods. I await their reply with interest...

I guess from now on there will be no synching, updates or adding to the things already stored. Starting from scratch again makes me feel nauseous.

Is there somewhere I can store data - virtually - as having backups on physical external drives, networked machines and other storage units is rendered useless when thieves take everything...

Why why WHY?

Really sorry to read that you've been burgled

from what you say this is not the first time - it sounds like the local scum have your home on their list of easy targets.

You should ask your local police crime prevention officer on what measures you can do to improve the security of your home, otherwise i fear it may happen again. Opportunistic thieves will move onto easier targets if you make life more difficult for them.

There are plenty of online storage places but they do incur a yearly fee. Well worth it though and not that expensive (9p a day ish using www.carbonite.com - which is one I'd recommend).

i use FileFreak

it's free, and really quite good...

Quote:
“- 1 GB of space that you can access from any computer.
- 250 MB of daily outgoing bandwidth.
- Upload files as large as 50 MB.
- Create up-to 20 folders to neatly organize your files, mp3's, and images.
- Insanely efficient customer support!
- Hot linking enabled!
- Cost = FREE!”

like most free online storage, i think you probably have to log in to your account every so often - but i am not sure, never had to find out

1GB of space is quite generous for a free host, but you could set up multiple accounts to get round that.

Get a Zune. You can swap them from computer to computer.

Ironically, they caused so much damage trying to get in because of all the security. Luckily :: my neighbours watched the whole thing and got a good look at them as they took a long time casing the place and trying to get in.... Pity they didn't the call the Police and just watched it happen though...

Thanks, will investigate...

I have received bog standard replies from Apple thus far. Have requested an explanation as to why I can't synch the 'other' way round though and explained that as a result I won't ever be able to use iTunes again without losing my entire library and that I won't be investing in a replacement Classic for this reason. Not that they'll care, but thought I'd let them know anyway.

With a classic IPod it is pretty easy as you can transfer the contents off the IPod onto your computer by accessing your IPod as a drive. It is more tricky on an IPod Touch, but you can still do it with software.

As for a more permanent backup, try getting a 32gb flash memory stick which you can pick up for around £50 (iirc I saw one for £45 in Asda?)

for a little more than that you can buy a USB external HDD.

Play are selling a Toshiba 500gb usb2.0 external hard drive for £49.99 (RRP £109.99). Bargain!

First of all I'm really sorry to hear about your break in.

I don't know if this is any help but I just wanted to say that when my hard drive failed and my most recent iTunes backup restore failed I contacted Apple and they let me re-download the songs, etc that I didn't have - I had recovered about 75% of my iTunes library from an older backup but lost recent purchases which they credited to my account and I was able to download them again in the download queue. I think it was the "check for missing downloads" option that the "credited" - they didn't give me iTunes store credit - they just let me re-download the missing songs again.

Fingers crossed for you and all the best.

Kind regards,

Steve.

You need to visit this site!

or

Even music on a reformatted iPod can be recovered:

have you even looked into this? cause there are programs that CAN transfer music from your iPod to PC.

There's a paid for app I have used in the past called iPod Access I also use occaissionally if someone likes a track of mine and wants it for their phone I load this up, it reads the music database on the touch and you can then select songs you want to transfer and click on backup or copy and then say where to save to

Why don't you suggest they purchase the song? What you and your friend are doing is illegal.

I back up my important files, like my iTunes library after a certain number of new additions, not just to an external drive but also to DVDs and have them located away from home. In other words, an off site back up solution is your best bet in such a scenario.

OTOH, when I bought something it should be my decision where I keep it. Keeping it away from you is quite stupid. That's why I do not use itunes shop. I would lie if I said that all music on my ipod is bought, but when I like something I buy it in the best quality available that I can make a use of and that's CD. Then I can transfer it to my ipod or play it in my CD players.

The other way you could get stuff back off it is to use Winamp. It won't allow you to download purchased songs, but will allow you to save any of your other tracks back off the iPod.

It's free too! www.winamp.com

Sorry to hear that they got you too. I take it that you'll have to start your collection all over again too... Glad you were insured. Did it cover your music collection specifically?

Funnily enough, I watched an item on the Gadget Show alerting people to the fact that if you have a large music collection, you should seek out specialist companies that insure against it being lost or stolen.

I should ask my loss adjusters if they'll cover the costs of me paying a company to burn all my cd's back to a new laptop/external hard drive. I wasn't covered specifically in my policy so it's highly unlikely though. I won't hold my breath. Thieves...

How do they keep it "away from you?"

I cannot access it in a normal way on ipod unless I hack into it, because I am a potential thief for them.
