My contract has recently come to an end with tmobile, and I am not going to upgrade as I want an iphone.

I use my phone as my camera, and like to take video clips too, so I've decided to wait for the new iphone which I believe is rumoured to include a better camera and flash and, hopefully, the facility to record video clips (tho that isn't a dealbreaker for me).

I have read that Vodafone may be in the mix as a network provider as well as O2. Are there any more rumours as to when the new iphone may be available? Does anyone know?

Even if its announced, it could be several months away.

From the rumours, the camera may be going to a 3.2mp autofocus, so thats only about 3 years behind the competition .

As for Vodafone being in the mix - thats an interesting prospect, but I thought that O2 had it exclusive for a good few years to come.

I mentioned Vodafone as I'd read about the possibility on other DS threads, but I've no idea as to it's validity...

I know I might have to wait a few months, but for me, that is better than getting the iphone now on an 18 month contract, and then regretting not having waited when the new improved iphone does come out. Is quite hard as I'm not the most patient person in the world! Which is why it would help if anyone had a rough idea - something to keep focussed on.

For the record, a 3.2 megapixel camera, when put togther right of course, can sometimes knock the socks of those with higher stats. My trusty old K800i took pictures that were leaps and bounds above my partners 8MP camera phone.

The widely touted date for the new handset announcement would be at WWDC June 8-12.

That's about a month away so not exactly long to wait and see.

As far as I know, you can't unlock the iPhone 3G as yet, but the original iPhones can be unlocked.

You can buy an unlocked iPhone 3G though, but it will cost ya!

The announcement one way or another will almost certainly happen June 8th. Rumour has it release might be July 17th.

You need to have an iPhone manufactured before Sept 2008 to be 100% sure of unlocking it. After that they updated the bootloader to 5.9.

If you've upgraded your baseband past 02.28.00 (ie you're on the latest firmware with baseband 02.30.03) on a 5.9 phone, you can't go back.

02.30.03 on a 5.8 phone can be downgraded to 02.28.00 though so the yellowsn0w unlock will work.

FWIW O2 told me last month when I upgraded to iphone 3g that if a new one is out in summer they will offer an upgrade/trade in option as they did with the 2g>3g upgrades.

Also, I am more than happy with my 3g

That could well happen, though I doubt very much the O2 staff have been told this for sure at this stage! What is more likely is that the person who sold you the phone was getting a little carried away with their sales pitch to close the deal.

There a very good arguments that suggest there will be no 'free upgrade' as happened last time as the iPhone 3G has been heavily subsidised (unlike the original).

I would actually be very surprised if they let people upgrade early and pay just the same as a new contract - it wouldn't seem to make any business sense whatsoever.

Think about it - you have just bought a phone worth over £300... if they let you upgrade in a couple of months O2 will be well out of pocket!

All that said, I hope they do allow me to upgrade (I will have a good 6 months left in July) early! Not holding out too much hope though.

There's plenty of rumours, but no-one knows for certain. If one is to be released there is a good chance it will be in June when they upgrade the software as well, but alternatively they may not release a new one for a while after that.

depending on the lens used of course.

anyway, as long as there's a 32GB version (almost certain) i'm planning on getting one to replace my existing iPod and phone.

based on anything in particular?

i'd be surprised if nothing was announced on 8 June, and be surprised if nothing was released by the end of August for the run up to a new college year and xmas.

Possibly the netbook that Apple have been rumoured to be making for a while too!

Well simply nothing as been even announced yet , even if an announcement appears in June , which itself is not looking likely , the demand worldwide would surely swamp Apple for a summer launch worldwide , wouldn't it

Rumoured and strongly denied by Apple I might add - although on previous form means they are about to announce it
