Hi there, having just purchased a refurbed Topfield 5800PVR, I have noticed that it doesn't have a LAN port. How do I get it online to use the remote record function?

There are two ways.... first, note that this isn't an out of the box solution, so it's not supported by Topfield themselves.

If you have a spare mobile phone and SIM card, there are some TAPs that you can install on the Toppy which work in conjunction with the phone plugged into the serial port.

Alternatively, you can use the Toppy Remote Control facility, which is provided by Toppy.org.uk; this requires a USB link from the PVR to a computer - either your PC, or something like a Linksys NSLU2, or various Linux-based NAS units.

What happens then is that a script runs on the computer, periodically polling the Toppy web site for new timers that have been set via your account; you either set them via the web pages there, which is free, or via SMS, for which a small charge applies.

Presently, it's £1.50 registration, and then for each timer you set, 25 pence. You send a message that says something like

Toppy record CSI / 5 at 2100 for 120 on tues

There are scripts that will help you set up most of this on the Toppy web site - you first need to sign up to the forums there, and then on the front page of the site, use the same name and password to sign in to 'Your tools' and click 'Set timers'

FAQs for the service are found at http://www.toppy.org.uk/faq.php?category=97

And it was launched before Sky had their SMS recording for Sky+

Hi and thanks, regarding the spare phone and SIM idea, I assume this one doesn't cost 25p per time, as I have serial data cables and phones and spare sims in a drawer. Where can I find information regarding that method as I couldn't find anywhere on toppy.org.uk?

Please help, thanks for the very informative replay.

No, it won't cost anything that way... SMS timer is one of the options, http://www.toppy.org.uk/downloads/info.php?tid=216 and the other is iGuide SMS, I think.
