4music had a twitter vote yesterday afternoon where you could tweet the songs you wanted them to play. Interactivity and giving the viewer choice is a good thing bit of course you could only select from a set of songs that they play every day. They could have just chosen the songs themselves and the playlist would have been the same.

scuzz do something similar and I'm sure it's rigged. Couple of times I've tuned in, they're playing one song, offer the same three to choose from, and the same song wins and comes on next. Could just be coincidence but I'm sceptical!

Yesterday afternoon VH1 had 5 hours of 'Music Never Felt So Good' which is their standard playlist. No chart, no theme, just back to basics music TV. It was a refreshing change!
It is a change. You know it won't happen often though.

Precisely.

You've every right to be sceptical about these channels.

As I stated earlier, the same names get all their songs played on Clubland (1 voter) and songs with more than 1 voter and those voters who appear on screen as 'just in' don't often see the light of day.

Heat are funny. In the same two hours:

Timberlake
N Sync
Madonna Ft Timberlake
Nelly feat N Sync
Black Eyed Peas Ft Timberlake

Beyonce
Destinys Child
Shakira and Beyonce
Beyonce and Jay Z
Gaga and Beyonce.

Please don't tell them about Rihanna ft Timberlake or the appalling Jacko ft Timberlake or they may as well rename themselves Timberknowles TV.

Its weird ain't it? The channels playlists hardly differ by day and its only an IF is at weekend or late night

Surprised they play Madonna ft Justin Timberlake - still like it I admit (have the Peter Saves New York mix), your more likely to see a Bauer channel play that one where as MTV seem to completely ignore that (as from what I have seen)

The playlists in general need a complete overhaul on all channels lets be honest - variety has gone out the window and if they change their playlists its mostly at weekends only, it just seems more as if they are ashamed to play certain songs/artists, ie take VH1 why do they not do proper disco/rock nights instead or why not repeat old VH1 programming ie Tommy Vance (suggestion) these days its all too safe

Timberlake and Ciara now. 4 of the last 5 songs have been Beyonce or Timberlake in some form and it's meant to be 'variety'.

Now have played some form of Ed Sheeran about 5 times in the past hour or two as well on a non specific artist show.

Are there different forms or are you just referring to the songs? Last class with my fave lecturer on Monday

"Variety" means something completely different these days - its more of basically sticking with the same songs/artists stuck on repeat, I could understand say if the playlist was more varied per channel ie MTV Dance plays a song of today then goes back to say 80's then 90's and 00's but these days the variety they all speak of is usually as far back as the 00's anything before that is kept as weekend/late night "specials"

I know Vintage TV does play variety in my mind - but again the programming can be repeated over the week and within the programme same songs will be randomised but to think a channel like VH1 is stuck on ballads and the same countdowns is basically a mess - yet years ago it played all genres but today its stuck for mostly todays music and will dip in and out of 80's/90's - I don't have MTV Classic but for VH1 in my book its a fall from grace if Vintage TV seems to do a better job than they do

I saw 4Music's *ahem* request show - and yes its as transparent as a Russian election. I do wish OFCOM would let it go about the text scandals nearly ten years ago. Perhaps if we change government, we may get a bit more freedom.

Sadly when a few individuals abuse it, and with record companies able to throw packets of cash to TV channels, this is the end result

Vintage TV has lost its EPG info for some reason.

Tonight its rock night on 4Music - on just now top 100 (nothing new in this) Kerrang 100 followed by Slipknot Live .... Oh well its a bit different to see it on 4Music, when did we ever see VH1 do a rock night? Is it just me but it seems more like Bauer has a bit of interest in playing rock music on another channel but MTV insists with having it on one channel ie why not play some on MTV Hits/Music or MTV Live (MTV Live aka MTVNHD played rock gigs sometimes), I can be wrong on what I say on this but at least its different to see

MTV doesn't even play rock on it's own rock channel

Rock night on 4Music reminds me of the days when they used to do a similar thing on The Hits.

It aint my style of music but baffling really - MTV has a rock channel that ends up playing George Ezra/Ed Sheeran on it - I remember the days of MTV2 when it looked more of a crossover channel playing hip hop ie Public Enemy to the likes of Slipknot, yep and by reading this you will be left wondering what this lot at MTV have really done to these channels!

I remember that as well "the hits" ran a rock night but these seem to appear every 6 months or its a once a year event - why they just don't expand the playlists to feature some of these artists I just don't know

Think that was just a show from Kerrang.

Number 1 show on MTV Classic in the latest BARB figures: 100% NUMBER ONES OF THE 80S: TOP 50

Maybe they should try more 80s music instead of refusing to play it other than bank holidays.

VH1 just played Simply Red - Say You Love Me.

It's all manipulated. Charts, airplay, awards - the lot.

It may be just because it was a bank holiday but they should test the theory out on weekdays to see the result.

In years to come when some music channels shut down, will they disappear altogether or will they rebrand into an entertainment channel (what will Sky/companies etc do with the extra channel space)

Looking likely that they will turn into entertainment channels, Even a +1 or +24 gets more ratings then a music channel these days.

The bigger question is - if they rebrand them as a general entertainment channel, do we really need any more of them - channels these days are no different which is shocking

I just recently watched 2 programmes on Discovery called "Secret Amazon" (drugs in Brazil) and "North America" (programme was about insects/wildlife), irony of it all was these programmes were stuck on after 10pm! I was expecting "North America" be aired during the day but shoved on late.

I will watch H2/CI sometimes as well but again majority of these channels are aiming in a new direction but if music channels need to go then by all means go but don't use the excuse that we need another "MTV" channel, its bad enough the publicity that channel gets its unbelievable par Channel 5

My prediction is this.

Viacom
VIVA > Spike +1
MTV Live > Spike HD
MTV Live HD > MTV Music HD
MTV Rocks > Paramount Channel
MTV Dance > Paramount Channel +1
MTV Base > Paramount Channel HD
MTV Classic > 5USA HD
VH1 > 5* HD

I still think MTV Music and a HD counterpart might survive though as the only Music channel(s) left from Viacom.

Bauer/C4
The Box , Kiss , Magic , Kerrang will survive others closed!

CSC/Sony
Chart Show TV , Scuzz , Flava & Bliss will survive but the rest will be gone. Likely that The Vault will become General Entertainment as a Retro Pop Culture channel with a little bit of music on the side but far less than now.

AATW
Clubland TV will stay other music channels from them will close.

Global
Capital TV , Heart TV will stay

Others
Vintage will stay

Yeah I hope so too No I wouldn't do that! She's too good for that show. She'll still be my dissertation supervisor and I'm going to her office on Wednesday I didn't cry in the class in the end but I got to have a little chat with her as usual.

Well, according to the MTV ads they need a new housemate. Maybe you instead? Are you a secret Geordie?

Hoping when Viva go all music they think outside the box a little.
