Not just VIVA, all MTV/VH1 channels on Sky finally switched to full PAL resolution earlier this week. Their bitrate is still the same as before, which means this switch could (and should) have taken place around 15 years ago...
MTV Hits which used to have an unusually high bitrate (about 4.5Mbps) has now been brought down to the same level as the other channels as MTV Live SD appears to be moving to the MTV transponder, so they need room to squeeze that in.

Great to see they're now broadcasting in full resolution, it's definitely a lot clearer.

Yep, from 544x576 to 720x576. Too bad it took this long!

If they start to close music channels, They could dump other Viacom channels into it too.

Chilled TV went downhill faster than I expected , seems to have turned into an R&B channel now.
Yep was different at the start and now it's just too much R&B. They were playing different stuff at the start - Oh Wonder, some cool remixes of popular songs... time to remove from the favourites I think

Looks more like as if someone has put a title to a programme and basically stuck the usual suspects on - seems like Blissmas has done a VH1 - say a "decade" party on but songs don't match

I do hope VH1 does not do "decade" parties but then again they are able to get away with it since the year is no longer displayed on screen 😔 but if its MTV Classic hmmm

As for in general it does seem that the lack of research and money talking it makes you why OFCOM has not stepped in anywhere as its possibly some programming is false advertising is it not?

Title of programmes - remember back in the 90's it actually meant something!

MTV Dance - i'll say it again they at times seem more confused as to whats dance and not - I will say I do like that Ed Sheeran/Rudimental (only one I would play on MTV Dance), I also noted last night they too had a "Geordie Shore Warm Up" -- MTV your obsessed with yourselves there aren't you not? Surprised there was not a "Geordie Shore Warm Up" on MTV Live/Music/Hits/Base and VH1 since the programme itself is plastered over the channels
All these warm up programmes are just titles and nothing to do with the show.

Geordie Shore Warm Up should be Cheryl Cole, Ant & Dec and Gazza with Fog On The Tyne!

VIVA looks unusually clear , very good picture quality , they seem to have upped the bitrate which looks similar as BBC 1. VIVA used to be very bricky until today!
It's better. Next up Planet Pop! Maybe

Unlike MTV to be behind everyone else

Sounds about right. Surely a mistake? Was it all 00's?

Christmas Number 1 contender - let's start a campaign

It seems VH1 Poland got the new (2014) look a few weeks ago, but it looks so much better than ours. The shows (like "US Chart") have opening titles after ad breaks, the chart number is shown before the video and the graphics showing the name of the current show look nicer too. They're just little things but it improves the presentation of the channel.

Why are these foreign versions always better than what we get in the UK?!

Thats because the UK versions these days is pretty much dumbed down - it probably is like Poland they seem to care more about the channel and the presentation style - meanwhile us in the UK get the crappiest of designs (but of course they'll forever update the design/graphics of the MTV channels but be VH1/Viva they couldn't give a fig about)

More like spot the Geordie track - I get the point you make too - its just complete nonsense for programming, I just find it more embarassing that they have to advertise it all over the channels whilst other channels hardly get a looking a la VH1/VIVA

I seen the recent Geordie Shore ad where it was fighting galore on screen - is that allowed? I thought ads during the day were meant to be well .... PG rated? Or is this MTV trying to break barriers during the day against ITV's Jezza?

4music with their 2015 has changed the world. If anything 2015 has been the most forgettable year in the mainstream. It's always 1D, Beiber Monster, Little Mix - aka the chosen few and all this lusting of girlyman Harry Styles.

What does 2016 have in store? I can see it getting worse, but these channels could close by the dozen especially if the economy goes tits up again.

Did you also take a look at VH1 Polska's new schedule/contents by any chance, besides their design?

Yes, it's very basic with not much in the schedule, although lots of "100% Music" instead of constantly repeated themed charts maybe isn't so bad.

VH1 UK's schedule has been extremely repetitive over the last few months, with charts like "100 Biggest Voices of All Time!" and "Sing-a-long with the boys/girls! Top 50" on every couple of days and I doubt it will change after Christmas.

Correct! All music slots providing a little "diversity" are completely gone. The channel now plays the same 20-25 current videos in a loop pretty much all day long. Not sure if you'd enjoy that much more than the silly countdowns on VH1 UK...

By the way, the design of Polska is a bit different because the channel TXs from Amsterdam. If it were still based in London, it would probably look just the same as UK/Euro.

Has anyone on this thread got anything positive to say about music channels? I continue to be baffled by why you actually watch them if you hate them so much.

It would help if there was more variety on all the channels than stuck on the loop? Your paying for a subscription on these channels and all we get is the same crap day in and day out.

MTV Base is probably the only channel I can be positive (and Vintage) about but the rest are just embarassment. Maybe the channels in general should stop aiming for the one demographic and be more open minded with their playlists?

I wonder when MTV will eventually drop its teleshopping service? In this day and age why are these channels even carrying them?

As a viewer I rarely watch them its only when I am channel surfing/checking EPG guide just to see whats on and if anything different to what they play but nothings changed sadly, in saying that I'll probably be dropping these channels soon anyway as its not really worth it these days

Do music channels have to get permission to play music videos from the different labels?, or how does it work?

As far as I remember the artists were paid royalties ... It was not that long ago that there was talk that some artists were going to abandon the music channels for payment (I can't remember if it was more of the artists moaning or it was the record labels)

The name of the programme is basically designed to get people to watch. I'm not quite sure why people would want a Geordie Shore Warm up or Warm down to be honest though.

I'm not sure who decides what is PG and what is not but Britney's crminal was banned in the day because of guns. Kesha's die young was not banned in the day despite of guns.

Bauer are terrrible though. 4Music, Smash Hits and Heat are basically the same channel with different names. Even The Box has half of the same songs.

I see MTV had their annual MTV Stars. 5 days in and the top 2 had 19 million votes each and the 3 or 4 after were over 10 million. It should be called MTV Spammers as the T's and C's state you can retweet as many times as you like. Do kids have nothing better to do these days? The vote doesn't end until mid December so then MTV will come on and say "You've been voting in your millions/billions" when they'll find that it's actually a few hundred spamming.

Do music channels have to get permission to play music videos from the different labels?, or how does it work?
In the old days. These days I suspect the labels are paying a small fee to get their artist on the channels hence they want a return for that fee and the repetitive playlists are because of this.

As far as I remember the artists were paid royalties ... It was not that long ago that there was talk that some artists were going to abandon the music channels for payment (I can't remember if it was more of the artists moaning or it was the record labels)
I think that is old school now. I think it's labels paying the channels in exchange for airplay thus the channels are still running. I don't think channels will close as they are being funded and if they close, the artists don't get airtime.

Has anyone on this thread got anything positive to say about music channels? I continue to be baffled by why you actually watch them if you hate them so much.
I personally watch far less than I used too. Even in the past few months they have gone downill fast. Their are good moments but very few and far between now, sadly.

There are some positives.. I'm not a huge fan of urban music but I think MTV Base is run really well and is probably the best of the MTV UK music channels. And from a production point of view, Heart and Capital both look brilliant. Chilled was a pleasent surprise although as others have mentioned it's a bit urban heavy now. I really like the chilled house/ibiza stuff they sometimes play though.

However it seems the end of linear music TV is growing nearer. In France, MTV have closed 3 of their music channels (Base, Pulse and Idol) and are launching an online service called "MyMTV". It's kind of a video version of Spotify. You choose your favourite artists or style of music and create your own personalised music channel. From reading badly translated French articles it seems they plan to roll this out in more countries in future.
