So what do you mean both charts are the same? Which charts?
The Official Top 40 and UKHot40 both have the same top 10's but 11-40 are always much different. Never have the top 10's been different, so i'm wondering if the Top 10 is purely based on sales and 11 downwards is different - as you suggest downloads and airplay.

It was the same when I was younger, the Pepsi Chart with Dr Fox was Top 10 the same as the official chart, but the rest was all over the place.

I'm not sure why the rules for the top 10 are different.

Well I've certainly had a blast from the past today , been going through a couple of old VHS recordings which i had totally forgot i even had , there's even a few recordings from channel flicking in the early 2000s. there we some clips from music channels too , i'll have to convert them to digital format so i can upload them onto you tube.

The music channels that were on the recordings were :

MTV UK playing Toploader - Dancing in the Moonlight on ',MTV Select'
MTV Extra had some video from Aaliyah i think on 'Top Tunes'
MTV Base played Baha Men - Who Let The Dogs Out
MTV2 playing Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Otherside
VH1 had Mojo - Lady in 'Hits 2000'
The Box playing Lene Marlin - Sitting Down Here on 'Smash Hits you Control'
Kiss with Mr Oizo - Flatbeat on Kiss Anthems
Play UK with Top of the Pops on Play

and thats pretty much all the music channels that existed on Sky back in 2000 have to admit though MTV UK and VH1 , The Box and Kiss were far better back then and some bits of the EPG List had these programmes on the schedule :

MTV UK : MTV Select , The UK's Number One Music Channel , Dancefloor Chart
MTV Extra : Top Hits , MTV Dance
MTV Base : Beats on Base , Smooth Grooves
VH1 : Hits 2000 , Long live the 90s , VH1 Top 10
The Box : Smash Hits you Control , VIP Track of the Week
KISS : Kiss Anthems , Biggest Dance & R&B , Friday Night Kiss
PlayUK , TOTP on Play , LA7 , play dance , The Story of Ibiza

Must admit PlayUK really looked like a fantastic 20 something channel back in the day shame we no longer have such a channel that treats its audience with abit more respect.

My guilty pleasure from PlayUK was "the joy of decks" I think it ran on friday nights from 7pm-9pm (I can be wrong)

MTV UK: The UK'S #1 Music Channel ... it ain't now!
VH1: I rarely remember the name of those shows but VH1 Top 10 rings a bell (the other "top 10" on VH1 I remember was "10 of the best")
The Box: remember that "slogan" was that to do with Smash Hits and The Box acting as "one" yet it was the start of Smash Hits channel?
I had analogue cable , I use to phone The Box .....oh the good ol days (where The Box crashes and phone calls resumed service lol)

The one thing that annoyed me about "The Box" in days of analogue was when they started up on Sky (jukebox ran quicker ... so did the "now playing") yet they were running "The Box" on cable to the ground ... sometimes it was not updated! ... and they made slip ups - classic moment was when Eiffel 65 Blue was playing on the Cable version - people phoned in and the system was refusing the requests (yet box number appeared for it whilst in play!), I still don't understand what was the reason for the "laziness" on the cable version to sky but then I think either it was later that year or a year or 2 we on cable moved onto the sky version (you knew by the phone number as well - cable/sky had different numbers)

Haha i so remember The Joy of the Decks sounds about right i think , The show did run on a Friday night but i can't remember the time it used to air though however you could be right.. It was wrong for UKTV to ditch PlayUK it was such a decent channel , i sincerely doubt that they would want to relaunch up the channel again in the future or even launch a channel for the 20 something audience with a different name but who knows they did relaunch DRAMA which was previously Blighty and before that UKTV People which was originally PlayUK , i think UKTV People was the replacement channel as soon as PlayUK closed . I guess anything is possible cause there seriously is a lack of Interesting decent channels for youth adults.

I Suppose the only closest channel you'll get nowadays for the 20 something demographic is E4 but without any music themed shows or interesting music documentaries about various genres of music they could do that if Channel 4 wanted to make the channel a little more interesting rather than air repeated US shows at prime-time during the weekends.

As for your question about Smash Hits , I believe so i remember seeing them showing advertisements for Smash Hits Magazine years ago on The Box this eventually stopped when the Smash Hits music channel launched as they were later shown on that channel i think they stopped promoting the magazine on the channel about early 2005ish just before they had a slight tweak to the logo.

OOOH I have a good memory then , yeah and you wanna know who was behind that show?? Eddie Temple Morris (name still sticks with me) ... if I was to compare this show to HotMix on 4Music I prefer The Joy of Decks - it was more of a free roam show (didn't really know who was going to be played - but I do remember showing some of the mixes on PlayUK request show similar to MTV Select. Regarding closure of PlayUK according to wiki it was UK History aka Yesterday http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Play_UK

The closest channels most definately are E4 and ITV2 (ITV2 for Benidorm thats it - E4 Big Bang thats all they do!) I am more of an ITV3 person now prefer classics on TV to half the stuff that is churned out now!

I remember the slogan very well as it was not long after they got rid of the American Accent on The Box "bumpers" it was then replaced by the voiceover who done "Live and Kicking" - Mitch Johnson http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitch_J...28announcer%29 heck may as well throw it out there anyone remember when The Box done a 2 for 1 requests?? They split the ads up in the most awkward places??

I do remember quite well that tweek too, was that the start of The Box "graphic" problems as well? - they ran more of a "computerised" on screen info and number (no longer highlighting as such song title/artist graphic fade on with box number?), as I remember that also that when they moved forward they system looked like it crashed more frequent? (I presume this will be why it no longer runs a "jukebox" / request)?

The Box - Music Television YOU control to The Box - Smash Hits YOU Control - good old days definately!

I suppose it comes down to airplay ruling what people buy (as people say).

Maybe the ten most songs bought (Official UK Singles Chart) are also the ten most played songs?

The Box switched to a new system in 2000 which had much better picture quality, but the software was full of bugs and crashed a lot. It got better though and was more reliable after a while.

I think they stopped doing requests quite a few years later in around 2007, as they started to add charts and themed zones to the schedule like all the other music channels.

That sounds about right as they were using the same system on all their channels I believe?

I was surprised they were moving away from requests, as I did not see any "warning" of change of format as I am sure up to the last day they were still taking requests and then as you mentioned themed zones/countdowns came in (could say the very same thing for KISS/Smash Hits/The Hits/Kerrang/Q (they were all using "the box" system)

The countdowns are boring, Who wants to sit through the same 50 songs on a loop?

That would be great to remember that MTV had quality programmers back then and people who managed this channels individually!

This could be vision of shame to sud-professional posers that are in MTV HQ right now!

Really hoping that from 1st Feb VH1 will have new look and better schedule and better schedule without embarrassing errors like pointed in this Thread

They're still having lots of errors at the moment. I saw the start of "Top 50 Tracks of the 10s" this morning, with:
Christina Aguilera - Fighter (2003)
Sugababes - Ugly (2005)

does any of VH1 programming actually come out without errors I see it was not a "disco" - how the hell can you not spot those errors? Someone is either living in the wrong decade or basically is taking the mick here? The VH1 programmers sure need to get out more don't you think??

Pretty sure VH1 was really aiming for 50 Tracks of the 00's than 10's?

Its bad enough a few weeks ago I believe it was either Heat or 4Music had 100 songs of the decade and were playing some tracks of the 00's in it - why do that? Fair enough we are in 2014 but there is no need in running these type of shows if your featuring songs well over a decade in a chart!

I would hold your breath on that one.... we will either be surprised or it will be the same people running it into the ground its not like MTV really cares for VH1 anyway ie VH1 advertising "Geordie Shore" and the alike and as with its "themes" they can't get that right either and in most cases if its "80's" they are at least 3 decades out with songs put into that theme!

Linkinpark can I ask what were the songs they played and what improvement you think has happened? (just wanting an idea as if they are able to improve MTV ROCKS playlists then surely with more effort it can be applied to others (but I doubt that!)

I doubt it, every week for the past 30+ years. I think it must just be they share the top 10.

Anyway, the new UKHot40 no longer has the few songs that were in last week that are months/year+ old. It must have been a mistake.

They need to change 10's or 00's to 21st Century to cover their asses a bit more.

It's embarrassing that so many mistakes happen. Occasionally, yes, but numerous times a day...

By chance is it easy to get a job with MTV you reckon? Just appear clueless and you have a job? Seems pretty much an easy job to run VH1 make so many mistakes yet no change , yet if this was a job where Health and Safety was involved you be either sacked or suspended (so why does it appear for the clowns of these networks to get away with it?)

I'm guessing it's an elite group with jobs handed out on who you know rather than what you can do - that's show business.

MTV Hits programme, All New Releases Monday is actually songs already in the chart.

I listened to a local radio station at the weekend as we were re-vamping work and I heard so many songs that i'd not heard in years - Songs of the last 10 years were so few and far between that over 14 hours I must have heard about 10 of them. Bliss! (and not the TV channel)
