Are memory cards region free?
Hello.
I am going to buy a new camera which uses Compact Flash cards for my holiday to Japan. I will get a card before I go but I was wondering if I were to buy more while in Japan would they be able to work in the camera and on my laptop when I got back home? Thank you. |

Region coding only really applies to commercial DVDs. It is possible to put a region code on any materail you record yourself but by default no region coding is applied.
In any case if there WAS region coding on a Japanese card it wouldn't work on your UK camera and Laptop when you are in Japan! The camera and laptop have no idea where they are in the world so will not suddenly switch to Japanese region out there then back to UK when you get back. For the same reason any region coding imposed by the camera will be UK anyway so it will work perfectly well in Japan or the UK. Apart from perhaps not working on a Japanese region device. But as I say there won't be any region coding on your own recordings so it won't be an issue in the first place. |
