I just looked at my G1 and it says im roaming on Orange UK.

I thought that I can only be on T-Mobile uk given my contract is with them. But most importantly, is it going to cost me money if it keeps switching to other networks or is it something the operators do anyway.

Over the course of this year, the operators are finally implementing the ability to roam onto other UK networks for emergency calls. See the various threads on the subject and news reports.

I too, have roamed onto a different network, but no calls were possible (Apart from emergency I presume - I wasn't going to make a 999 call to check!)

It's a pity all of the networks couldn't get together and allow roaming. There'd be virtually blanket coverage for everyone.

Same. I'd even pay extra for it like an option.. "Enable UK roaming for £x a month"

Can you make calls on it? If so, you have the best coverage of any mobile user in the UK. I wouldn't grumble!

Maybe its just for emergency calls but the G1 doesn't realise this. Its like when a Sony Ericcson goes to "Emergency calls only" or "Limited Service" on a Samsung.

It means your out of coverage, but their is another networks signal available, but just for 999 calls.

If your using other phones, like on my old Nokia, I know it just shows no signal when your out of range, but if you need to make a 999 call it will say "attemting emergency call" and if it finds another network use that. Unfortunately a lot of people don't know that, because it doesn't tell you on screen it has any signal, and therefore wait longer than they would have to to make a 999 call.
